How would you pronounce Bleu?

Ok, friend of a friend had a little boy a few days ago and announced name of fb. I ended up seeing the announcement because friend of a friend commented on it.

They've named their baby Bleu. Am I going mad? That's pronounced like Bl-er isn't it? Like Corden Bleu?

All comments are saying how lovely it is and how he is their 'little boy blue.'

I didn't say anything and then our my friend mentioned that her friend had had a little boy and named him Blue. I said "oh like the colour?" and she said "yes, but they've spelt it the french way, think it's Bleu"

I said that Bleu isn't pronounced Blue but Bl-er and she looked at me like this --> Hmm

Isn't this baby going to go through life with 'Bl-er' as a name or have I got it really wrong? Blush

It's definitely pronounced Bleugh.
People do this a lot with Irish names - I know of an Eabha who pronounced it Eee-fa (which is actually spelled Aoife) when it should be pronounced Ava, a Shaun who says his name is pronounced Shan, and don't watch Corrie but I think they did this recently with Michelle's baby - called him Ruairi and pronounced it Rory. Gets on my wick a bit. Just pick the right spelling/version if that's the name you want ffs.

I would presume it's pronounced Blue.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 16/06/2017 13:51

Omg
Is it a typo and really he's called Blue??

Iknowacrackingowlsanctuary · 16/06/2017 14:16

user Definitely not a typo. I may have had a sneaky look at both the parents' FB pages and they are both spelling it that way!

No-one else seems to be mentioning it, I feel like I'm the only one baffled by it all Confused

No not Tyga but interesting that there's more than one type of animal-bleu!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 16/06/2017 14:30

I glad I don't know anyone called Tyga-Bleu or Betee. I'd be very unsure about pronunciation and saying it out loud, I'd probably end up doing a half hearted attempt at a French accent and sound like the policeman off Ello Ello.

livefornaps · 16/06/2017 14:36

If he ever goes to France he's gonna have a real.laugh introducing himself. Mind you, I suppose "Red" is a character in oitnb.

And I did once meet a French wee girl called "sixteen". "Sixteeeeeen! Tu viens la!"

KatharinaRosalie · 16/06/2017 14:46

And I did once meet a French wee girl called "sixteen".

Sixtine is a common French name

Hersetta427 · 16/06/2017 14:48

We know someone who named their son Blue. Poor little fucker has a middle name of Colin so he is buggered both ways.

Quite frankly what ever what it is spelt it is ridiculous as a name for an adult

RoganJosh · 16/06/2017 14:54

Just to clarify the bleurgh bler, bluh confusion, I'd pronounce them all roughly the same.
I think it's a rhotic vs non rhotic thing? So I'd say barth the same as bahth (which comes up as a how to say bath conversation!)

MaisieDotes · 16/06/2017 14:58

There was a Sixtine in the family I did my exchange with, back in the days of yore (1990 or so).

The mother told me it was like "Sistine" as in the Sistine Chapel.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/06/2017 15:02

'Bloo' Grin

livefornaps · 16/06/2017 15:08

Haha! I stand corrected

elQuintoConyo · 16/06/2017 15:10

Is their surname Tac?

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 16/06/2017 15:13

Would have assumed Blue and the dps missed a lot of spelling tests at school. .

MikeUniformMike · 16/06/2017 15:14

Sixtene - is the short form or nn Sick, Sis or Six?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 16/06/2017 15:28

tip Is it Zebbrah, Leppard or Focks?

Decaffstilltastesweird · 16/06/2017 16:06

It's definitely bluh

SafeToCross · 16/06/2017 16:22

The thing is, there is such a wider variety or names, spellings and names originating from other countries and cultures, that it is not possible to know how each is spelt or said any more. May as well adapt to that as get frustrated with it.

Youvegotafriendinme · 16/06/2017 16:31

I went to school with a girl with that name and same spelling- she pronounced it blue as well

harderandharder2breathe · 16/06/2017 16:32

My first thought was Bleurgh

Red is a nickname in OITNB it's not her real name (which is Galina I believe)

Decaffstilltastesweird · 16/06/2017 16:33

I knew a Jeune, pronounced June. It doesn't make it correct per se , it's just one of those things people like to do to be a bit different. It can end up looking a little silly in some cases though, imo.

TipBoov · 16/06/2017 17:24

andnone similar to a tiger, although not striped!

BeesOnTheWing · 16/06/2017 17:26

Geagwar?
