Ok, friend of a friend had a little boy a few days ago and announced name of fb. I ended up seeing the announcement because friend of a friend commented on it.

They've named their baby Bleu. Am I going mad? That's pronounced like Bl-er isn't it? Like Corden Bleu?

All comments are saying how lovely it is and how he is their 'little boy blue.'

I didn't say anything and then our my friend mentioned that her friend had had a little boy and named him Blue. I said "oh like the colour?" and she said "yes, but they've spelt it the french way, think it's Bleu"

I said that Bleu isn't pronounced Blue but Bl-er and she looked at me like this --> Hmm

Isn't this baby going to go through life with 'Bl-er' as a name or have I got it really wrong? Blush

Love her name isn't Animal but it's an animal, don't really want to say as it's pretty unusual! Also the animal is misspelled... Think Ellyfahnt-bleu!

SleepWhatSleep1 · 16/06/2017 13:11

(how do you pronounce Anais then?)

chinlop · 16/06/2017 13:13

(how do you pronounce Anais then?)

An-ah-eess.

Untangled07 · 16/06/2017 13:13

'Bluh' definitely. If they had a daughter named Fleur would they pronounce it 'Flu'?

troodiedoo · 16/06/2017 13:13

Is the animal tiger?

EpoxyResin · 16/06/2017 13:14

Ha! I think they're confusing pronunciation with translation....

Im in France and Anaïs is pronounced anne-aye-ees (the s at the end is pronounced). The Bleu thing is just barking though.

nina2b · 16/06/2017 13:17

"Bler" eh??

HmmOkay · 16/06/2017 13:17

Intrigued to find out the name of the child with the animal name:

Rayven-Bleu?
Kitti-Bleu?
Tyga-Bleu?

You don't have to say, Tip. I know you don't want to identify the child.

chinlop · 16/06/2017 13:19

I would bet a lot of money that it's Tyga/Taiga.

Paperclipmover · 16/06/2017 13:19

Tyga-Bleu I know her, and her sister Betee

WhenLoveAndCakeCollide · 16/06/2017 13:21

I have a relative who named their son Mathieu, declaring it the 'French spelling' of Matthew.

I said, "but it isn't a French spelling of Matthew, it's a French form of Matthew, and is pronounced mat-YEU."

Relative said they weren't bothered by that, and they were pronouncing it 'the English way'. Well fucking spell it the English way then.

Chestervase1 · 16/06/2017 13:21

I think they must have been to Fountainbleu Hilton in Miami.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 16/06/2017 13:22

Wally How else would it be pronounced?? Oh actually I have heard people pronounce the brand Aden & Anais as 'Aden and ANAY'! WTF.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 16/06/2017 13:25

Soz Wally, just saw that someone above asked and your statement wasn't just random and standalone Grin

KatharinaRosalie · 16/06/2017 13:28

You will find several threads in this very topic where people state that it's pronounced Anay, apparently this is quite common understanding in the UK. I wanted to use the name for my DD but this put me off.

when the Anais Anais perfume was first on sale the TV ads said

Anay Anay perfume

ScrambledSmegs · 16/06/2017 13:34

I hope the parents are chilled out types otherwise they're going to get very annoyed with people assuming the child is called 'Bleugh'.

Wolfiefan · 16/06/2017 13:35

Love the Bloo suggestion. Isn't that a toilet cleaner?! Grin

ScrambledSmegs · 16/06/2017 13:35

No, the adverts have always said it correctly, steppemum. I think this has been discussed (and debunked) before on MN.

Brown76 · 16/06/2017 13:38

That's very confusing. I knew a child called "blue" and they spelt it "b-l-e-u" I'd correct their spelling, as I'd think they'd gotten the u and e the wrong way round. 'Blu', 'Blue' or 'Bloo' are ok.

PattyPenguin · 16/06/2017 13:39

If I came across a child called Bleu, I'd pronounce it as in French. And if the parents said "It's pronounced Blue" I'd have to say "No, blue is spelled B-L-U-E".

It's not even obscure - it's one of the first words you learn if you go to French club in primary school, for heaven's sake, never mind do French in secondary.

trinitybleu · 16/06/2017 13:43

I pronounce it Bluh Grin
