Just wondered what people's opinions were on planning names for future children when deciding the current one. If we have a boy this time we are planning to give him two middle names as we prefer the name this way, but that might mean if we had another boy in future we would be more stuck for names we like. On the other hand, we might not be lucky enough to have any more children/have girls, so then we'd wish we'd used the names we liked first time! Thoughts??

I'd just use the names you like now.

As you say, you may not have another child of the same sex. Or, if you do, you may find that your tastes have changed slightly and you have a new favourite name.

I did this. Had a name I liked as a middle name for DS1, but I decided I liked it too much to use it as a middle name. So I kept it for DS2, who obligingly arrived next Grin

We went with a family name as a middle name for DC1. It's a nice name, but it isn't one of my favourites, except that it was honouring a relative. I wouldn't use it as a first name anyway for that reason so this issue wouldn't have come up!

I tend to think some names work better as middle names and others as first names, so I probably wouldn't be in a position where I used up all my favourite first name options on one dc iyswim.

That might be helpful or really unhelpful, sorry Grin!

I was conscious of this...so we used the names we loved for the first names of our 6 sons & family names (grandads, great grandads, etc) for their middle names. I'm glad we did this as I'd have been really annoyed if I wasn't able to use one of my favourite names (plus we'd have run out!!) 🤣 Also very glad we had all boys as I'd be totally stuck for girl's names as there are none that I really love.

Thanks ladies. I'm so torn! It was hard to conceive this baby so I suppose thats impacting on my thought processes about possible/not possible future children versus the 'perfect' name now.
