Darcie and Aurora too common?

winterspirit · 13/06/2017 02:33

Are Darcie and Aurora becoming too common? They are such pretty names but I want a unique name.

Other names up for debate:
Gabrielle
Elise
Bonnie
Sadie
Sally
Pixie (too out there/better as a nickname?)

Are any of these names too common?

I want a name that's pretty and unusual but not weird or will be difficult for kids to spell/pronounce.

Please tell me which ones you like the most. Thanks.

As I teacher I've only ever come across one Aurora, but lots of Darcies, if that's any help?!

winterspirit · 13/06/2017 03:03

Ah, guess that's Darcie off the list then :(

What age group do you teach? I know Aurora isn't a common name among teenagers and adults but over the past couple of years, I've seen it as a suggested name lots of times and new mums calling their baby girls Aurora.

I really love Darcie! Bonnie is cute too. What about Macy/Macie?

Starfairylights · 13/06/2017 03:25

Love Gabrielle. Never come across an Aurora & one Darcie

KingIrving · 13/06/2017 03:51

Love love Pixie, and Aurora, quite popular in Italy.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 13/06/2017 04:45

Love Aurora

(and Aurelia [with the Ah-RAY-lee-a pronunciation] or Ariella).

Elise is one of my favourite girls' names: classy, international.

Gabrielle's pretty, though I slightly prefer GabriellA.

Raphaela/ Raphaella is beautiful: I've only ever met one under 5, so definitely not overused!

Anoushka?

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 13/06/2017 04:56

^ Though maybe Raphaela/ Raphaella and Anoushka don't meet your brief for names that are necessarily easy for kids to spell?

On the other hand, plenty of so-called 'regular' names cause just as much puzzlement over potential spellings (Katherine/ Katharine/ Catherine etc., or Clare/ Claire/ Clair etc.),
so I say go with what you truly love...other people will soon learn the correct spelling/ pronunciation Smile

Aurora number 136 in 2015 in the UK, not sure if you consider that too common?

names.darkgreener.com/#aurora this site is really helpful

sleepingdragons · 13/06/2017 05:20

Elise is my favourite, followed by Gabrielle

blahthisistoohard · 13/06/2017 05:22

Darcie 74th and Darcey 77th, so if you combined the spellings they would be higher.

Pixie is 350th so certainly not common but could you really give a baby that name? Kind of limiting them to what they could do in life imo.

Bonnie 120th, and Sally surprisingly has declined rapidly since the chart started to 1007th in 2015

thefamilynaom · 13/06/2017 05:28

I love Darcie! I haven't met any little Darcies but not in the UK so not sure if that helps you at all. Sadie is another favourite or Zadie if you want something a little different.

RelaxMax · 13/06/2017 06:29

Pixie is better as a nickname. Imagine if she turned out to be 6 foot and really muscly, "pixie" would just be a silly name then.

I've met one baby Darcey, but none of the other names.

Onceafortnight · 13/06/2017 07:49

I know one Darcey and never heard of an Aurora. I like all your other names!

Crumbs1 · 13/06/2017 07:52

If you want to avoid common then Gabrielle is only possible name. Pixie could be used as a middle name but she'd have a choice whether to use it when she was older. I sort of like Pixie but isn't it after a pop star?

OpalIridescence · 13/06/2017 07:53

I know one Aurora, one Darcie and one Pixie!

OpalIridescence · 13/06/2017 07:56

FYI, the Aurora and Darcie that i know are girls aged 6 and 9. Pixie is a grown women, and a scientist..

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/06/2017 09:01

759 Darcie's born in 2015 (2016 stats not avaliable yet)
606 Darcy, 44 make Darcy
737 for Darcey

So quite a few if you combine spellings. Saying that I only know 1

Aurora is 417 so alot less popular. I know 2. One is 7 and one is under 1.

I like Gabrielle and Sadie and don't know any.

I know a Pixie (sibling to Eudora actually) but I'm not a fan

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/06/2017 09:07

Aurora is a bit Sleeping Beauty imho.

Darcie - lots of them about!

I like Sally,it's such a happy,pretty nameSmile

24hoursinER · 14/06/2017 02:06

I think Darcie is the the Sharon/Tracey of this decade.

AGnu · 14/06/2017 02:50

If you want something really unusual, Aranea was one of the babies in Charlotte's Web. Possibly not suitable if you suffer from arachnophobia but I've always thought it was a really pretty name!

harderandharder2breathe · 14/06/2017 09:23

Darcie/Darcy/Darcey is very popular

I only know one Aurora who's a teenager and I love the name

Gabrielle I really like too, I like Gabby but some people don't

Elise - I don't like, I only know one and didn't like her Blush

Bonnie - i quite like, don't know any (apart from a pony when I was little)

Sadie - I like, only know one who was lovely

Sally - not sure on this one but I don't know why

Pixie - awful imo, sorry

winterspirit · 14/06/2017 21:20

Sorry but names like Raphaella and Anoushka fall into the category of weird for me, and they aren't easy to spell either. Aurelia is a nice name and would love to meet an Aurelia but isn't a name I'd personally pick.

I want a name that's beautiful, meaningful, uncommon but easy to spell and won't be seen as a weird name.

Crossing Darcie and Pixie off the list. Thanks everyone for your input and name suggestions. Gonna cross Elise off the list too as I feel it leaves something to be desired.

Aurora (love the name but concerned on how common it might be)
Gabrielle (lovely French name which is uncommon, after Coco Chanel as it was her first name and Elle is a nice nickname)
Bonnie (cute, uncommon, Bonbon is a nickname, Bonnie Bennett from The Vampire Diaries is a kickass character and it means pretty)
Sadie and Sally are both names I love that both mean "princess" and are uncommon

Thanks a lot for linking the darkgreener site, very helpful!

Hate all the names on your list. They remind me of strippers or porn stars.

winterspirit · 14/06/2017 21:23

If you're going to insult my names list, then don't bother posting.

Oneiroi · 14/06/2017 22:07

Whether common or not, they are cringey! Elise is the only one from your list that wouldn't make me shudder a bit, to be honest.
