Allie?

We were thinking of using the name Alison, NN Ali, but came across this alternative spelling as a given name. I quite like it BUT it then gives us issues with the MN as it ends in y so doesn't really sound right.

Or should we just use Alison and give her the NN Ali?

I really like the idea of Allie as a given name though

I'm an Allison Smile!!

(Allie for short)

I think it RocksWink

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/06/2017 23:58

Alison is lovely.

Sophronia · 13/06/2017 00:07

Alison as the full name. Allie can also be short for Alexandra if that's an option?

Flowerdew2 · 13/06/2017 00:08

I prefer Allie to Alison, in my opinion if you're only going to use the nickname then there's no point in giving them a different name! The spelling "Ali" is a very popular name for Asian boys, I don't know if that would affect your decision. Where I live every other boy is named Ali. Allie is more feminine.

What's the MN you have in mind? Could you have that without the y?

BackforGood · 13/06/2017 00:17

I would go with Alison and let her choose, as she grows up, what she would like people to call her.

GumDropTears · 13/06/2017 00:18

The MN would be Mary.

We would probably only use Ali/Allie especially when younger, but if DD wanted to use 'Alison' then the option would be there for her if she chose (if we gave her the full name)

The only thing really putting me off is the clash with the MN - which is really non negotiable!

Alison Mary is nice!

CoreyTaylorsMask · 13/06/2017 00:42

I have an Alice, shortened to Ali. She chose the spelling, I prefer Allie.

MiniMaxi · 13/06/2017 07:45

Alison or Allison followed by Mary sounds nice

Allie Mary a bit rhymey but people won't often use her mn

Love Allison, Alison and Allie! Such gorgeous names.

29Palms · 13/06/2017 11:33

If you give a proper name, a child gets a nickname or diminutive as a bonus.
If you only give a nickname or diminutive you are short-changing your child.

The more I think of it, the more I like Allie. I think we would have Alison on the bc then refer to her as Allie and use that spelling.

I'm 4 days overdue now so hopefully not long to make up our minds!!

It could be a boy after all that!

My adult daughter is an Alison. She gets called Ally, alsey-palsy, Als and lots of other variations by different friends. She prefers Ali but tells me that the best thing she's ever been called is mum
