Hey, baby boy due soon and so stuck on names! Surname is a Mac, middle name will be Thomas. List below, all opinions welcomed please!! So stuck! Xx

Lochlan nn Lockie (worry is it's too unusual here, could be pronounced wrong?)

Hamish (am I crazy?)

Francis nn Frankie (Is Francis actually a horrible name and my baby brain is saying otherwise?)

Caleb

Charlie

Robert

Gabriel (is this setting him up for 'gay' teasing?)

Any thoughts much appreciated! Xx

I like Lochlan (Lockie).
Robert is a good name also, Robert Thomas Mac ..
Francis is good, prefer Frank as a nick name though.
Not keen on the others, sorry.

29Palms · 10/06/2017 12:53

Robert

I do like Francis, but don't like Frankie.

MikeUniformMike · 10/06/2017 12:53

Never heard of Lochlan but Lachlan is OK.
Robert - OK but makes me think of Rob Tichenor.
Gabriel - No. Don't like Gay or Gabe as a nn.

Charles (Charlie Thomas was also a The Archers character) shortened to Charlie is good. Caleb I like a lot but might be a bit trendy. Hamish I quite like.

I also like James and Calum and my current favourite is Magnus.

Francis is OK. Not keen on Frank or Frankie (or Fran or Fra) though.
One Francis I know gets called France.

daisypond · 10/06/2017 13:02

I thought it was Lachlan, too. I like Lachlan with Lachie or Lachy for short.

AdaColeman · 10/06/2017 13:06

Not keen on Lochlan, though like Lachlan and Lorcan. You might have problems with people often assuming the name is actually Lachlan.

There are already a million Charlies as it has been in the top five names for years.

My favourite is Caleb, with Hamish second.

user1497094215 · 10/06/2017 13:07

Thanks for the thoughts, really helpful :)
How would you pronounce Lachlan as opposed to Lochlan? I know the first is the traditional spelling but worried people would pronounce it Latch-lan?

Magnus is an awesome name! Would you suggest a nickname? Might he end up Maggie?

Charles Thomas Mac
Robert Thomas Mac
Like both 👍

Hamish is my personal number one.
I agree now you mention it, Caleb might be a bit 'trendy'.
Thanks for your thoughts it's really helpful to get feedback xx

I'd pick Charlie or Caleb from your list.

user1497094215 · 10/06/2017 13:10

Maybe I'll scratch off Charlie (very good point again that there are loads of them, cute name though).

I've had a lot of mixed opinions on Francis/Frank/Frankie... still and decide if it's awful or I like it lol

Lachlan

Lach - like Lack but with the ch as in loch.
Lan - like the lan in Alan

if you are not sure of how to say it then the poor nipper will grow up with a name that is misspelt or mispronounced

MikeUniformMike · 10/06/2017 13:16

Yes Magnus will get called Maggie. Good point. Don't do it.

I'd go with Charlie. Never dates and is both manly and cute.

CowParsleyNettle · 10/06/2017 13:16

Charlie Mac is ace!

daisypond · 10/06/2017 13:33

Lachlan is pronounced a bit like Loch-lyn, with the ch like the ch in loch. I've never heard of it pronounced like Lach-lyn.

Lemondrop99 · 10/06/2017 13:56

Lachlan

MollyHuaCha · 10/06/2017 14:06

I like Hamish and Lachlan.

coralush · 10/06/2017 14:08

Gabriel

FreeNiki · 10/06/2017 14:11

Robert

Lucked · 10/06/2017 14:21

Love Magnus, if we had had a ds2 we would have used it.

Go with Hamish!
I like Lachlan, Caleb and Gabriel and what about Logan?
Don't mind Francis, I always consider Dominic a similar type of name.
Charlie and Robert are good solid names which I feel completely neutral about.

Sophronia · 10/06/2017 14:29

I think it's usually either Lachlan or Lochlann with the extra n. I haven't seen Lochlan before.

I like Francis and Robert best.

Sophronia · 10/06/2017 14:30

Oh and I really like Magnus. Nickname Max or Mags.

Sophronia · 10/06/2017 14:30

Or Magnus nn Gus!

grufallosfriend · 10/06/2017 14:39

Hamish and Magnus are great!

florascotianew · 10/06/2017 14:41

Lachlan/Lachlann is often pronounced LACH-lunn (not Loch-lunn) in parts of Scotland. I'm not saying that's the only way to pronounce it, but I've met more than one person - in Glasgow and in Gaelic-speaking Highland districts- who says their name that way. You can also listen here (the Scottish Gaelic option): forvo.com/search/Lachlan/gd/

The 'ch' is as in 'loch'. The first syllable is emphasised. A popular Scottish nickname = 'Lachie'.

I think the Loch-lunn pronouciation is the norm in Ireland; it probably reflects the original form of the name. The present-day Scottish 'Lach-lunn' is a later variation.

Lachlan is a very popular name in Australia; perhaps other Mumsnetters will know how it is pronounced there.

grufallosfriend · 10/06/2017 14:42

Please don't shorten Magnus! It sounds lovely as it is!

MikeUniformMike · 10/06/2017 14:46

Most names get shortened or lengthened. Neil was a popular name when I was young and they got called Nellie. I still like it though.

RuthB4 · 11/06/2017 16:46

I love love Hamish!
Also love Robert and Frank! Charlie is lovely too. And I really like Caleb and Gabriel/Gabe. I wouldn't worry about 'gay' jokes. Kids will always find something to tease each other for!
I like Lachlan (and think it's better spelt this way. I still pronounce it the same as Lochlan).

How about Gus as a shortened version of Magnus? I LOVE Gus!!
