Help! Traditional names

teenybean · 28/05/2017 00:00

Baby is due in just over 3 weeks, & we can't decide on a name, we're really struggling!

We like traditional names, but not common ones, & we don't know if it's a girl or boy, so the ones we've thought of that we like are

Girls;
Beatrix, (hate Beatrice, which is quite common here)
Isabella (common here though)
Delilah

Boys;
Henry (very common here though)
Austin,
Freddie (again common here)

Anyone have any other suggestions, please?

Sorry to sound ignorant but what's the difference between Beatrix and Beatrice?

Isabella isn't just popular on here- it's ranked 8th nationally.

Delilah is a nice name!

Other traditional names... Harriet, Felicity, Juliet, Georgia, Emily

If you don't like common names, definitely avoid Isabella, Henry and Freddie - they're very common in the UK right now.

I like Beatrix and Austin!

We liked traditional girls names (less so for boys) and our list was:

Girls - Robyn, Miriam, Nina
Boys - Reuben, Dexter, Declan

We had 2 girls who are Robyn and Miriam (who goes by 'Miri')

Personally, I would go with Beatrix, nn Trixie or Trix (to me, Bea sounds very old ladyish, perhaps because of Bea Arthur from The Golden Girls). Emma Willis called her little girl Trixie. I love it.
Beatrix and Beatrice sound distictive fro each other when said properly so I wouldn't worry about mix-ups. ps I also posted on your other thread.
William and Rupert are nice boys's names and sound in keeping with Beatrix.

Beatrix is a lovely name. Names that I think are similar are:

Miriam
Rosalind
Eleanor
Ingrid
Catherine
Elizabeth
Claudia
Cecilia
Georgina
Frances
Hannah
Marianne
Vivienne (however I know two)
Helena

I have a Henry - I like it a lot (thank goodness) but it does feel as though there are a lot around.

I prefer Frederick to Freddie but then I don't like nicknames on the birth certificate. Austin is a nice name. Other boys names could be:

Alexander
Hugh
Francis
James (I know two though)
Charles
Edmund
Sebastian

I think those names are modern and trendy not traditional!

Traditional to me is

Anne
Mary
Jane
Sarah
Rebecca
Ruth
Eve
Louise
Victoria
Margaret

John
James
Richard
Edward
Charles
Robert
Simon
Paul

teenybean · 03/06/2017 22:49

Thank you everyone, we're still undecided, so will have to see what he or she looks like when they get here!

They may be names that are getting 'trendy' but they are definitely all traditional names.

Ok but do come back and tell us what you have decided on.
