Marcus is nice, very classic.
I know 3 small Rowans, all male
Oren- if you can't decide how to spell it no one else will know either
I'd say Ma-THY-us, quite like it.
Rafe is RAYF, don't like at all.

AragornsManlyStubble · 21/05/2017 09:03

Marcus-likeit but wouldn't use it personally.

Roman-I know none personally but prefer it for a girl.

Oren- I know of one, but not keen on the name. It's mentioned a lot though so I think it's becoming more known.

Mathias- would be Ma-thigh-us to me

Rafe- would be Raf with a short a sound. I love it.

AragornsManlyStubble · 21/05/2017 09:04

mrs you explained my pronunciation of 'Rafe' much better than I did! Could not think how to write it out! Grin

SuperBeagle · 21/05/2017 09:06

Not a fan of Marcus. It's a bit dated for my liking (although it's a perfectly fine, inoffensive name - just not my taste).

I don't know any Rowans. I love it. It seems more male to me.

Dislike Orrin/Oren. Isn't this the name of the weird guy in Parks and Rec?

Mathias I would pronounce ma-THIGH-us. I prefer Mattias (ma-TEE-us). Or just Matthew.

Rafe I would pronounce to rhyme with rape, which is the reason I really don't like this one at all.

Epipgab · 21/05/2017 09:11

Not keen on Marcus or Rafe, both a bit wet
I've met one Rowan, female
Haven't heard of Orrin/Oren, don't like much TBH (I like Torin and Corin though)

Math-EYE-us, I like it, good substantial name, best on your list Smile

Barefoot789 · 21/05/2017 09:14

I have a Rowan (male) and there is another in his year group but other than that we don't know any others and rarely hear it in the park for example.
I like it for a girl also.

CricketRuntAndRashers · 21/05/2017 09:17

Marcus is fine, always reminds me of Venice :)

Rowan: 1, male

Orrin: Nice
Oren: Dislike

Matthias: mah-TEE-ahs.

Rafe: Rayf

tumpymummy · 21/05/2017 09:23

Dont like Marcus - sorry!

I know 1 Rowan (Father of daughters friend) so male! I like that name. Also know a dad called Alban (kind of similar!)

I like Orrin. Seems feminine to me. Maybe prefer Orin. Oren could get mispelled and misread as Oreo !

Mathias (Ma thigh Uz) Don't like it so much. Seems biblical.

Rafe (Ray f) Like it but agree could get autocorrected to rape.

Good luck choosing names is hard. DD was baby (our surname) for 6 weeks!

TipTop333 · 21/05/2017 09:26

What are your thoughts on Marcus
I teach a Marcus (teenager) and it suits him. I'm generally indifferent to it as a name.
*
How many Rowan's do you know? And are they make it female?*
One, male.
*
Thoughts on Orrin / Oren*
Reminds me a bit of a dwarf from the Hobbit. I'm sorry.
*
How would you pronounce Mathias? And opinions on it?*
Matty-us. I like it.
*
Same question with Rafe?*
Rayfe. Classic 'posh' name but it's nice.

TipTop333 · 21/05/2017 09:27

Bold fail there. Sorry.

Epipgab · 21/05/2017 10:01

The only male Rowans I can think of are Rowan Williams and Rowan Atkinson.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 21/05/2017 10:06

Marcus is fine

Don't know any Rowans but heard a boy Rowan being called the other day

Orrin/Oren - I don't really have any thoughts other than it makes me think of Kill Bill (O'ren Ishii). Have no other experience of it as a name!

Mathias I'd pronounce as MATH-ias but seems I am wrong judging by this thread Grin I'd only need telling how you're pronouncing it once though!

Rafe - I'd pronounce how it's written, to rhyme with waif. Isn't Ralph sometimes pronounce 'raff' as in riff raff, but sometimes how it's spelt i.e. Ralph? Confusing!

Eveninties · 21/05/2017 10:06

Roe-in =male and row-in (row rhymes with cow) = female I always thought...

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 21/05/2017 10:18

Love Mathias, Ma-thigh-as.
Not too keen on Rowan, Marcus (Mac), is nice too.
Orrin, not for me. I do like Rafe.
Don't know any Rowans, male or female.

hoddtastic · 21/05/2017 10:19

A few questions for you please

What are your thoughts on Marcus- I know one little one and a man one, we live in the north, it sounds horrendous with our accent.,

How many Rowan's do you know? And are they make it female? Rohan is male, Rowan is female.

Thoughts on Orrin / Oren - no.

How would you pronounce Mathias? And opinions on it? isn;t this Mat-tay-us?

Same question with Rafe? Rafe is awful

Teardropexplodes · 21/05/2017 10:26

Marcus - makes me think of a man in a suit and glasses. Middle management. Not sure why or if that's a good or a bad thing.

Rowan - know one, a girl. Nice name.

Orrin/Oren - OK but you'd need a simple surname as they would always have to spell it. Although it sounds nice with Gaelic names.

Mathias- Matt-eye-us

MiniMaxi · 21/05/2017 13:43

Marcus - I like it!

Rowan - I don't know any. One of my female teachers at school was a Rowan but i perceive it as more of a male name now i think.

Oren / Orrin - I like this too, prefer Oren spelling.

Mathias - not sure how I'd pronounce it. Ma-TYE-as maybe? I would assume he was German or similar.

Rafe - love this name. Pronounced Rayf.

DramaAlpaca · 21/05/2017 16:25

Marcus - love it.

Rowan - I know one, a boy.

Orrin/Oren - I like it, I'd spell it Orin though.

Mathias - I'd pronounce it Math-EYE-us, and I quite like it. I might assume German heritage.

Rafe - I'd pronounce it Rayf. It's better than the Ralph spelling, but I'm not mad on it.

wigglesrock · 21/05/2017 20:11

Marcus - I'm not sure about, it's a bit dated?
Rowan is a bit wet, I don't know any and I'd automatically assume it was male
Orrin/Oren - I know quite a few, it's quite popular in my kids primary school (NI) but mainly spelt Odhran
Mathias - I would probably say Ma tay us but would get it right when I was corrected
Rafe - I would say Ray f - I quite like Rafe - a touch posh for me but it would grow on me.

fanfrickintastic · 21/05/2017 20:34

Marcus - meh
Rowan - know 2 one male, one female
Orrin/ Oren - dislike
Mathias - I say Math-ee-uss
Rafe - I'd say Ray-ff, I like if.

Rockaby · 21/05/2017 20:39

Marcus - love it! Classic and underused.
Rowan - I don't know any. Would assume boy, but wouldn't be surprised if I met a female Rowan. I like it for either.
Orrin / Oren - don't like it. For some reason it has a whingy, nasal sound when I imagine it being said.
Matthias - would pronounce Matt-ee-yuss. I don't like it.
Rafe - I'd say Ray-ff. I like it. I prefer the spelling Ralph, but people would find Rafe easier to pronounce.

Giraffey1 · 21/05/2017 20:39

I know a couple of lads called Marcus. I think it's a nice name.
I have only ever known boys to be called Rowan.
I don't like orrin or whatever, too easy to misspell and not clear if male or female.
Math -eye-us is how Mathias is historically pronounced. Don't like it, personally.

Hassled · 21/05/2017 20:43

Marcus is lovely - good strong name.
I did know a Mathias but he was only ever Matty so pronunciation never came up. Matt-ee-as? It's a nice name.
Rowans are female IME.
Rafe - don't like. A bit of a chinless wonder vibe? And Orrin - a bit hippy-dippy mystic/lives in the woods with the elves.

mum2be2boys · 21/05/2017 23:45

Marcus - I like it. Only know one and he's a lovely boy with a bit of character so it has good associations for me.

Rowan - one (early 30s), female.

Orrin / Oren - not to my taste at all I'm afraid. Don't like this name, sorry.

Mathias - Matt-ay-us. I like it.

Rafe - Ray-f. I'm undecided about this name but it's growing on me the more I hear it, so I think I like!

Argeles · 22/05/2017 01:01

Rafe is beautiful, I love it.
