Gwyneth or Ffion

My husband is first language Welsh which is why we are choosing a Welsh first name although we live in England.
I think we are set for a boys name and until recently I loved Ffion for a girl but as the due date approaches I am starting to wobble. DH prefers Gwyneth which I do really like but somehow can't imagine it for a baby.

Any thoughts?

I like Gwyneth. Maybe shorten it to Gwen as a compromise?

harderandharder2breathe · 29/04/2017 13:21

I prefer Ffion (i live in Wales though)

Sophronia · 29/04/2017 14:38

I prefer Gwyneth

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 29/04/2017 14:41

I prefer Ffion, I think Gwyneth is seen as a bit more of an old lady name? Or maybe that's because I had several elderly teachers called Gwyneth and have never met a young one Grin

Madbengalmum · 29/04/2017 14:41

Neither sorry.

MiniAlphaBravo · 29/04/2017 14:43

Gwyneth. Ffion sounds stuffy to me.

AmysTiara · 29/04/2017 14:48

Ffion. Gwyneth is hideous.

SirNiallDementia · 29/04/2017 14:54

Not keen on either tbh but Ffion is the better of the two.

mayoli · 29/04/2017 14:56

Ffion :)

fishfingerSarnies · 29/04/2017 14:57

What about Gwenan instead?

CassandraAusten · 29/04/2017 14:58

I'm not Welsh but I know an Irish Fionn and an English Finn, both boys, so I would think of Ffion as a boy's name.

cragsandmountains · 29/04/2017 14:58

If you choose Gwyneth and you live in England, it'll be pronounced Gwynith. Would people think Ffion is F/eye/on, too?

Mrsknackered · 29/04/2017 14:59

Ffion or a different Gwen variant

Rockaby · 29/04/2017 14:59

Gwyneth

Thanks for replies.

I agree Gwyneth sounds like the name of someone older which is why I can't imagine it for a baby.

Gwenan is nice but has negative associations for me so can't use it!

Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board.... I've always liked Eleri as well...

I would think of Ffion as a boy's name.

It's definitely a Welsh girl's name.

glitterglitters · 29/04/2017 15:18

I love Ffion ❤️

AmysTiara · 29/04/2017 17:58

Eleri is much nicer than Gwyneth or Ffion.

EdmundCleverClogs · 29/04/2017 18:18

I don't like either I'm afraid. Gwyneth is too old fashioned and Ffion just sounds too close to the Welsh word for 'stick' to me. However, the latter wouldn't be an issue for an English person so I guess Ffion.

My favourite Welsh girls names are Bronwen, Rhiannon and Nia. I love Jennifer as well, but that's Cornish.

kirstxx · 29/04/2017 18:25

Ffion is the better of the two in my opinion. You mentioned Eleri which I also like.
I have Seren picked out if I have a girl though I can hear my DPs family calling her 'Ser' in their Bristolian accents which slightly puts me off! 😂
I don't think Ffion is easily mistaken for a boys name, to me it's too close to Fiona to be masculine but that's just my opinion!

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/04/2017 18:28

Does Eleri rhyme with celery?

ChunderDragon · 29/04/2017 18:31

I am a Ffion, it's a glorious name! Having said that, there are quite a few of us in North Wales, popular name.
Gwyneth Paltrow is such a dick, she's ruined the name for me!

ChunderDragon · 29/04/2017 18:34

@EdmundCleverClogs c'man ffon and ffion are worlds apart! The 'i' in ffion is where the emphasis lies.

EdmundCleverClogs · 29/04/2017 18:35

MitzyLeFrouf

Eleri is pronounced Eh-leh-ree, so elongated (and using Welsh phonetics rather than English).

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/04/2017 18:35

I love Ffion.
