Gwyneth or Ffion

My husband is first language Welsh which is why we are choosing a Welsh first name although we live in England.
I think we are set for a boys name and until recently I loved Ffion for a girl but as the due date approaches I am starting to wobble. DH prefers Gwyneth which I do really like but somehow can't imagine it for a baby.

Any thoughts?

Ffion.
Gwyneth seems like an older lady's name.

RueDeDay · 29/04/2017 18:36

How about Gwenno?? It's a slightly more up to date variation!!

kirstxx · 29/04/2017 18:37

Mitzy in my accent it's el-air-y rather than celery without the C.

EdmundCleverClogs · 29/04/2017 18:39

Yes, ChunderDragon, but speaking naturally the emphasis on the 'i' can sometimes be lost - not every goes 'Ffiiiiiion'. It also kind of sounds like 'phone' in a Welsh accent as well. Just my opinion, never liked the name much (sorry!), and most girls I've known to be called it haven't been very nice (though obviously that's just coincidence!).

SirNiallDementia · 29/04/2017 18:39

Eleri is a lovely name!

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/04/2017 18:41

Thanks. In that case I prefer Eleri to Gwyneth or Ffion.

Spam88 · 29/04/2017 18:46

I'm sitting here saying Ffion in various accents trying to make it sound like phone and I just can't...

I like Eleri best out of the three ☺️

EdmundCleverClogs · 29/04/2017 18:58

Spam88, that would be the Welsh for phone 'ffôn'

HorraceTheOtter · 29/04/2017 19:09

Seconding Gwenno. Or Elerie. Not hugely keen on Gwyneth or Ffion. My favourite Welsh girls name is Sionead though.

HorraceTheOtter · 29/04/2017 19:11

Arses. Eleri.

MyNewBearTotoro · 29/04/2017 19:26

I like Ffion as it makes me think of foxgloves. I really really like Eleri as pronounced with a Welsh accent - has a lovely soft, musical tone to it - but not sure if that would still be the case in England. Perhaps it depends where you live.

Not keen on Gwyneth at all. Makes me think of Gwyneth Paltrow and old ladies.

Frazzled2207 · 29/04/2017 19:27

Ffion js ok. Elerj is nicer though we have an Elerj at work (england) and nobody except me (welsh) can say it right.
Emphasis on the 2nd syllable.

My alltime fav welsh girl name would have to be Gwenllian, shortened to Gwen

Frazzled2207 · 29/04/2017 19:27

Obv meant Eleri not Elerj

ChunderDragon · 29/04/2017 19:43

@EdmundCleverClogs speaking naturally? Are you even a Welsh speaker? It's not lost, it's where the stress and imitation lies. Not being pedantic, it's how we speak. You clearly have issues with the name, like I with Gwyneth (damn you Paltrow)

BelafonteRavenclaw · 29/04/2017 19:46

Ffion was on my shortlist but we've had two boys. Eleri is lovely. I also considered Alys, Carys and Haf.

sonlypuppyfat · 29/04/2017 19:47

I've got a Ffion!!!! Beautiful name

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/04/2017 19:48

Eleri is lovely.

daisydalrymple · 29/04/2017 19:53

Ffion was top of our girls list.

Other names I like:
Cadi
Tesni
Cari
Peri
Elin
Carys

Thanks again for the replies.

As a non-Welsh speaker, I think both Ffion and Eleri are straightforward to pronounce in England. Gwyneth is frequently mispronounced as Gwynith (by myself included) which annoys
my DH!

I like Gwenllian and Gwenno but don't want anything that shortens to Gwen for various reasons.

We're going to have a serious think about Eleri tonight, I think it will be that or Ffion Smile

Damn and blast...I meant 'intonation'

daisydalrymple · 29/04/2017 21:55

I was at school with an eleri, also known a teleri and meleri!

troodiedoo · 29/04/2017 21:59

Just called my new dd gwendoline as a middle name. Though about gwyneth too. Old lady names are all the rage now.

harderandharder2breathe · 29/04/2017 22:12

Not Welsh but lived in Wales for a decade and struggling to imagine Ffion sounding like Phone. It's fee-on... how do you drop half of it? Have you ever met a Welsh person edmund?

I like Eleri but as per PP you may struggle with correct pronunciation in England. But then the same is true of many names and people manage

cadnowyllt · 29/04/2017 22:18

I knew an Eleri who lived in England for years. Never heard English people having a problem with her name.

MarcelineQueen · 29/04/2017 22:36

❤️ Ffion and Eleri.

Gwyneth reminds me of Gwynedd, which is a council area up here in the north
