I'm Sorley tempted to say I like it but no, just no.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 25/04/2017 22:50

I still don't understand the correct pronunciation?! Anyone?

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 25/04/2017 22:52

Ah, got it now! Agree with those who say it depends where you live.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 25/04/2017 23:17

It's like scone - it should have a hard o....as in gone

English peeps - it's like sorry with an 'L'.

So do you mean it's pronounced like Solly?

CreamCheez · 25/04/2017 23:19

Sounds like a Home Counties suburb...

MaroonPencil · 25/04/2017 23:23

DH is Scottish and he's never heard of it as a name (although he started trying to crack a joke about having once been to a funeral of someone of that name...could see where that was going.)

WhisperingLoudly · 25/04/2017 23:23

Also don't get the pronunciation but either way it will invoke connotations of pain

YesILikeItToo · 25/04/2017 23:31

My first question about it was "like Somerled?" But I've been off to Google now and see there are many many spellings. I'm from lowland Scotland, I perceive it as a fairly unusual but well accepted name. I quite like it, it has quite a 'surname'-ish feel to it, although I don't think it actually is. Those surname names in Scotland seem to me to be quite elegant and grown-up names.

MaroonPencil · 25/04/2017 23:37

How is Somerled pronounced? I had a book when I was young with a character called Somerled, and I have always pronounced it Summer Led in my head.

Pemba · 25/04/2017 23:46

I must admit I'd not heard of it before.

But even if it's not pronounced like sore-ly but more like solly, I can't see what's lovely about it?

Pemba · 25/04/2017 23:46

NOT like sore-ly I mean.

HoratioNightboy · 26/04/2017 00:16

No, like sorry with an L added in; sorrLy.

Apologies for not being clear!

YNK · 26/04/2017 00:19

Just to clarify - somhairle is pronounced sorley too, exactly the same.

I imagine somerled is the same too, although I'm unfamiliar with that spelling personally

iismum · 26/04/2017 07:10

I think the pronunciation confusion is to do whether you have a rhotic 'R'. If you don't (most English accents) then it does sound like sore-ly. If you do (most Scottish accents) then it sounds quite different because of the 'r' sound.

sexymuthafunker · 26/04/2017 07:25

So it sounds like Solly then?

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 26/04/2017 07:55

Not at all. The pronunciation is actually prett different.

AgentCooper · 26/04/2017 07:57

Lovely, strong Scottish name - i like it!

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 26/04/2017 08:02

YNK or actually. I think it depends. Seeing as the name is Norse in origin I (Swedish is my dad's first language) kind of automatically used that pronunciation when I saw the name for the first time (some time ago now, in a baby name book we got from MIL.) but I guess one could still use the pronunciation of Sorley?

Aquamarine1029 · 26/04/2017 08:24

It's awful. 'You're sorely mistaken' is all I can think about. It's just a negative word.

flumpybear · 26/04/2017 08:25

What about Sorrel?

YesILikeItToo · 26/04/2017 08:28

maroon - it's pronounced sorr-lay like all these other names. It goes with Chummly and Fanshaw (which I won't be trying to spell out) in my head, although not from the same places.

FamilySpartan · 26/04/2017 08:32

Sounds like an affliction where you're sore and poorly. Sorry.

Bathshebaneverdene · 26/04/2017 09:02

I guess it depends where you live? I'm in Scotland but have never heard the name.

user1471456357 · 26/04/2017 09:04

Absolutely love it, I'm Scottish thoughGrin
