What do you think of the girls name Olwyn? Middle name Mary. Smile

"Wyn" is typically a male ending of names, and olwyn is Welsh for "wheel". I do know one woman called Olwyn but she does get comments about wheels a lot.

Olwen is the more common female name, and I think it's nice with Mary :)

bexmwood88 · 22/04/2017 17:38

I knew there were two spellings and didn't realise that was the difference - thanks! It was DPs grandmothers name and Mary was my grandmother.

Olwen is cool! Olwen. Ooh, yes I like it. Ollie for short!! Fabulous.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/04/2017 19:10

I prefer Anwen.
However I used to work, with a very lovely Olwen.

I wasn't sure when DP first mentioned it but it's rapidly growing on me. Thanks for your responses Smile

My sister is an Olwen, I think it's a lovely name and the story that goes along with it is a great read!
But she has had nothing but confusion over it for the last 28 years and often gets called Owen. Or it's misspelled. She now introduces herself as Oz!
I'm a Rhiannon, we aren't Welsh and grew up in Bristol and find some dialects have real trouble with pronouncing Olwen.

HonorBright · 22/04/2017 20:49

Came in to say that Olwyn would be a boy's name but I've been beaten to it. Olwen is lovely.

TheLegendOfBeans · 22/04/2017 20:52

It reminds me a bit of owls BUT I like it because it sounds (to my untrained ear) mythical and olde worlde and wise.

Disclaimer I'm Scottish so I'm down with Gaelic names but Welsh ones are an ever evolving wonderful mystery to me.

Jooni · 22/04/2017 21:03

Olwen Mary is fab!

Sophronia · 22/04/2017 22:38

I really like Olwen Mary

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 22/04/2017 22:39

I'm not keen sorry - I don't like many Welsh names though, apart from Eleri. Olwen sounds like a fussy old lady to me Blush

DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2017 22:40

I also really like Olwen Mary.

vichill · 22/04/2017 22:42

beautiful. wish i had been more brave😣

LadyCassandra · 22/04/2017 22:44

I know an Olwyn, she shortens it to Olly. It's ok, she's not keen!

2ManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 22/04/2017 23:56

Definitely ending Wen, wyn is male.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 22/04/2017 23:58

I know an Alwyn - it's a male name. Olwyn or even Olwen reminds me of that.

Cagliostro · 23/04/2017 00:02

I love it!

Hadn't realised about the wyn/wen endings, that's interesting :)

RustyPaperclip · 23/04/2017 00:09

I know an Olwen and she is lovely, I think it is a beautiful name and will be a firm favourite if I ever have a daughter

GolderAndWiser · 23/04/2017 00:20

I like it! I'm Irish/Scottish and I feel at liberty to appropriate Welsh names too!

BackforGood · 23/04/2017 00:25

I like Olwen.
Nice name, and easy to read if a person sees it written, and easy to spell if a person hears it. Although clearly a Welsh name, is not too confusing for us English speakers.
I only know one Olwen and she's a lovely person, and that always helps. Smile

Dixiestamp · 23/04/2017 01:12

I had an Auntie Olwen and although it's more considered an 'old' name, I guess, I think it's lovely.

bexmwood88 · 23/04/2017 06:27

Thanks everyone. Yeah it think it sounds quite old but I guess some of the old names are coming back. We know a Mabel and a Percy!

I know an Olwyn - have known her for 30 years and this is first time I've learned that 'wyn' is the male spelling. I do t even know if she knows that. I guess as we don't live in Wales, it's not something that's widely known and therefore has never been an issue.

GinIsIn · 23/04/2017 06:52

I love Olwen. We have a great aunt Olwen. She's 98, and she's the coolest person I know - you should definitely use it!
