Johnny?

Not Jonathan just Johnny. My sister says it reminds her of a condom?! Is this still the case these days do you think? It's the only name I like, I have gone through every name in the world (twice). I don't want his auntie to be thinking condom every time I say his name though...

It's not to my taste, sorry, I like Jonathan and Jon though.

It's ok, a bit informal but fine. I know a Jonty and a Jono (their full names) if either of those appeal?

John nn Johnny or Jonathan nn Johnny is imo better. Johnny is too informal for the bc (im personal o).

If you do name him only Johnny, if will undoubtedly be shortened to John !

We have a Jonathan nn Johnny. He's been Johnny to everyone since birth (he's 4 now) and only gets Jonathan when he's naughty! I like that it gives him options for other nicknames as he gets older if he chooses it too. We did think about the condom think but it's such a ubiquitous name in the UK and US I don't think it matters. Do people hear 'Jonny Wilkinson' and immediately think 'condom'? I doubt it!

We have a 17 yr old Johnny- it suits him! He is Johnny on his birth certificate.

Nobody apart from a sleazy children's entertainer at a party when he was around four, has ever made a connection with condoms.

Nobody has ever shortened his name to John, Sugarpie.

I'd use Johnny, not Jonathan or anything else. I don't mind John, but prefer Johnny. Never new about the condom thing before Mumsnet.

Maybe it's just in my family then, SHOCKERS. Seems the older they get, the shorter their name !

What about Jonty which is the shortened version of Jonathan

I have an uncle and a brother called Johnny, I love it! Haven't heard the 'rubber johnny' thing since the 80s so I think you're safe there.

Johnsthan and give him the choice. He may not want a diminutive when he's an adult.

I've heard Johnny used as a name for condoms, but when I'm with/hear of a person called Johnny it doesn't occur to me to make the link.

Personally I prefer longer names on the birth certificate so there is the option of using it or a different nickname later, but that's a personal choice.

If you love Johnny, go for it!

When I was at school we had a health education video with a singing condom in it called Johnny Condom so Dsis says don't you remember the song he sang? lol and I did hear the term used on the radio literally two days ago so know it's still used by some people but glad you don't all have the same reaction!

He would definitely be Johnny not Jonathan though.

Johnny can't be a nickname for Jonathan - no 'h'! Jonty or Jonny are nicknames for Jonathan.

DD would probably have been Johnny. I absolutely love it. Goes really well with my surname.

By the time ds came along, I was talked into another name. Shame, ds would've suited Johnny.

I have a friend called Jonny, he is that on the birth certificate too. He has the occasional joke about his parents naming him that as the condom broke but it doesn't bother him, what annoys him more is at weddings people always put him on the table plans as Jonathan/some other longer version etc. He is mid 30s and I can't imagine him with a longer version of the name at all.

Johnny is a condom to my mind and I wouldn't put johnny on the birth certificate,I'd put john but if you love it go for it, it's not a bad name
