Rate my (new) shortlist

All hypothetical at the moment as we are only starting TTC DC2, but I am determined to get a head start on names this time, as DH and I have such different taste. It ended up being quite stressful last time.

We did a deal in the end where I chose a boy name and he chose a girl name, (we both liked, but didn't love each other's choices). She turned out to be a DD, so we went with DH's choice.

DD has a classic name, which was more popular in the eighties and nineties than it is now. I love it now, but it is on the safe side and the only thing I slightly regret is that it hasn't got much potential for shortening, which is something I'd like for DC2 name.

DH has already vetoed my favourite boy name which is Josiah with nn Joe. He thinks it's a bit out there / trendy.

Bethany - nice
Saskia - beautiful, I love this name
Robyn - don't like the 'y'
Scarlett - nice
Imogen - v nice

Christopher - lovely
Vincent - nice
Marcus - nice
Edmund - not for me
Timothy - the dog in Famous Five!
Josiah - love it

My favourites are Saskia and Edmund.

Josiah is lovely, too. Presumably you've considered Joseph nn Joe? Or Josias?

I'm not mad about Joseph, but do like Josias (which I hadn't thought of, so thank you) and Jonah. DH feels the same about Jonah as he does about Josiah and I suspect he'd say the same about Josias.

I don't like Josiah at all. It sounds very American.

But I love Imogen

I like Imogen and Vincent.

I love Saskia, Imogen, Scarlett.

Strongly dislike Robyn and Bethany.

Like Christopher and Edmund, but not the other boys' names.

He thinks Jonah is out there and trendy . Josiah is a bit unusual/trendy and Joseph is very common. I'd say Jonah is right in the middle and a lovely name. I'm a fan of traditional names but I feel, in your case, this time it should lean more towards your choice which he will end up loving just as you did.

I like Bethany, Saskia and Imogen. I like most of the boys names, except Edmund Blackadder but Jonah would be my favourite.

Thanks saud. I agree with you (of course)! I'm going to keep Jonah on the list and see if it grows on him. It could take years to actually conceive so imagine I have time on my side .

Saskia is the only one of your girls' names I like (Imogen is OK but having a real 'moment' atm) - I think it's fabulous, a really great name - and Edmund the only boys' one I absolutely don't like, though I prefer Christopher and Vincent to the others.

Bethany - bland, it was done to death in my dd's age group (she's 18)

Robyn - not keen at all, it's a bird to me
Scarlett - very trendy
Imogen - I like

Christopher - quite but not keen on Chris

DH is fine with the nn Joe, but has no strong feelings about it. I quite like Joey. It makes me think of a Bob Dylan song, which is sad but lovely. Unfortunately, it also makes me think of baby kangaroos and Dawson's Creek, so I don't know if I'd use it.

I like Bethany and all the boys names.

Saskia and Imogen are the bitchy twins in Angela Carter's Wise Children. Interesting both names are in your list. I like them too.

Oooooh that's interesting trumpstinycock! I've never read it and hadn't even heard of it (uncultured) . When I googled, I saw Dora and Nora are the names of the main protagonists though, which I also really like.

I have Isadora, Theodora and Leonora on my long list but DH isn't at all keen.

I love Eleanor, with Nell or Nora as a shortening. Though, we already have two Ellies, (short for different names, one of which is really similar to Eleanor), in the extended family.

I love Saskia. Imogen a close second.

I like Christopher but not Chris, Vincent but not Vinnie. I can't decide about Timothy.

Have you considered the Cornish name Jowan? It can rhyme with Rowan and have a hard J sound or it can be pronounced Yowan with the first syllable said like Yo or now.

I am not mad about Chris either tbh, but really like Kit. I can live with Chris if that's the way it went though. I also know a Christie who really suits it so that's a possibility.

Jowan is nice. I hadn't heard of it before.

My favourite of the girl names is Scarlett but I also like Saskia.
Timothy is definitely my favourite of the boy's names.
