Madison or Madelyn?

We will be using Maddie. We're not looking for opinions on Maddie :)

Also, we're not looking for opinions on the spelling of Madelyn (this is the most popular in the US - I'm not American, but I'm just saying that it's a well established spelling). We want it to be obvious about the pronunciation we would like - Madeleine seems to be Mad-eh-len and Madeline seems to be Mad-eh-line, so that's what we have decided :)

Anyway, should we go for Madison or Madelyn as the BC name?

If you aren't American and aren't living in America I'd go for neither. Madeleine will give you the pronunciation you want and Madison is very marmite.

I don't really see the logic of saying that the spelling Madelyn could be pronounced made-lyn . OK if you split the word apart you can make it into two parts, made + lyn . But then you get exactly the same thing with

made + leine and
made + line

Nobody says made lin do they? It's just not a thing.

I love Maddie! DS would've been Maddie if he was DD! DP and I couldn't agree on Maddison or Madeleine so decided we would just go with Maddie seeing as that what she would've been known as anyway.

Madelyn

How would you pronounce Madelyn?

Made line
Made lin
Mad eh lin
Mad eh line
??

I don't like it at all-it sounds made up. I'd put it in the box along with the other 'made up' children's names that I've taught along with Niahm and Chiana.

SuperBeagle · 21/03/2017 07:33

Niahm

Niahm or Niamh?

MollyHuaCha · 21/03/2017 07:36

Madeleine (spelt like this), but however you spell it, the name is now forever associated with the poor little girl who was abducted Sad

Madison = made up, masculine, sounds like an uneducated choice, so no for me (sorry).

I like: Melissa, Amanda, Margaret Smile

Love the name Madison, especially with the nn Maddie.
I know two and they are both lovely. One spelt Madison, the other Maddison.

I think op is trying to get it pronounced with a Lin sound not line , hence the dodgy spelling Wink
