posting because i can't talk to anyone in real life who isn't biased. dd needs registering soon and we still haven't talked properly about her last name. i mentioned when i was pregnant i wasn't happy about it just being dp surname and it caused an argument so just haven't brought it up again. the obvious this is to double barrel but we both have really long surnames and i think it would look silly. ive thought about having one of our names as a middle name but how do you decide who's names where?? Sad

don't know what to do

Not out of favouritism, just because it's not him who's asked. It isn't a good or bad argument, it's just a fact worth the OP's consideration.

My mum gave me her surname at birth, then when she and my dad got married he took her name!! Brother has the same surname too... They are now divorced and he kept the name, his was awful though. I agree, it's not fair it should just be assumed father name will be used, or to assume if you get married you'll just take his name anyway! I would double barrel, bit you should try bringing it up again anyway with your reasons
