Oh, how about Rosalind?

regularbutpanickingabit · 12/03/2017 10:53

Carina - car but also a term of endearment in Italian. Would be like calling a child 'sweetie' or 'dearest' and would be odd
Susanna/h - more commonly used with a z. Like it with an s but she will probably ending up correcting people all her life
Arielle - Quite like it but don't like the way certain accents would pronounce it. Try saying it as if you were the landlord at the Queen Vic
Ariella - agree with the areola comment?
Millicent - that nursery rhyme! Too twee, too awful
Helena - elegant and timeless. Like a lot
Eliana - also like a lot but there are a LOT of ellie/elle/ellas around and she is likely to get it shortened
Amynta - nope. Sounds like a boiled sweet with pretentions. Also looks like you meant Araminta but forgot how to spell it.
Serena - Lovely too
Louisa - much prefer without the 'o'
Annabella - ok but another ella sound
Annabelle - will forever correct those who spell it with a single l at the end
Erika - way too spiky
Antonia - i have an irrational dislike of this name and so cannot answer with any good reason. Please avoid!

DaphneDeLaFontaine · 12/03/2017 10:56

Love Millicent.

capercaillie · 12/03/2017 10:58

Love Susannah, Helena and Louisa. Not so keen on most of the others.

Chewbecca · 12/03/2017 11:06

Can I add Imogen to your list?

Carina - yes, all I can think is car. How about Corrine as an alt?
Susanna/h - could be ok, quite like Susie as nn
Arielle - no due to Disney connection & washing
Ariella - ditto
Millicent - too twee
Helena - a name for a very sensible little girl
Eliana - no
Amynta - i cannot work out how to pronounce so no
Serena - tennis player
Louisa - nice, classic
Annabella - twee
Annabelle - twee
Erika - hard
Antonia - dislike Toni & Ants as nn

sosieso · 12/03/2017 11:47

Carina - don't like it
Susanna/h - nice biblical name and I like the nickname Susie
Arielle - looks like Ariel and so I immediately think of the mermaid.
Ariella - don't like this
Millicent - like the Millie bit but not the cent and unless you're calling her by her full name I would just go with Millie/Milly.
Helena - beautiful if pronounced Hel-en-a. I don't like I pronounced Hel-ay-na
Eliana - I have a friend called this and she gets Ellie mostly. She is half-Iranian so it really suits her complexion
Amynta - sounds like a shortening of Araminta.
Serena - makes me think of Gossip Girl which isn't good but also Serena Williams which is.
Louisa - sounds nice
Annabella - too much of a mouthful
Annabelle - not my style, but not unpleasant - nice nickname in Annie
Erika - better spelt Erica
Antonia - will be shortened to Toni which is really chavvy.

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 12/03/2017 14:15

sugar

Sorry. I just... Idk why I had such a bad reaction to that name. But I think I visibly cringed when reading it. I'm honestly not sure why I have such a bad image of the name Jacquelina. Blush

So, Carina has been taken off the list. So has Annabelle, Ariella, Annabelle and most likely Annabella. And probably also Eliana. It's beautiful but maybe a bit too soft/elaborate/frilly.

The current list I'll have to ponder and annoy DH with ;) is:

Elisabeth (I don't like it with the z. Is it too weird? The z sounds bad in German imo)
Susanna/h
Millicent
Helena
Amynta
Serena
Louisa
Erika Erica
Antonia

You've been tremendously helpful and I may come back with a new list in a few weeks. Thank you very much xx

I love Millicent. The only one on the list I like.

SauvignonPlonk · 12/03/2017 14:18

I like Antonia and Serena. The others are a bit wet/nothing-ey to my taste. Milicnt is dreadful.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/03/2017 14:23

Chippie, your final list is so much nicer now.
Let us know when you decide. 😄

willconcern · 12/03/2017 14:25

Carina - OK but not soecial
Susanna/h - yes I like this, quite unusual now. Also like Suzie
Arielle - yuk yuk
Ariella - yuk yuk
Millicent - no way
Helena - timeless & classic
Eliana - ok. Prefer Ilana or Lana though
Amynta - no way
Serena - no
Louisa - OK but boring
Annabella - no, too many syllables
Annabelle - much better
Erika - no
Antonia - ok

willconcern · 12/03/2017 14:27

Didn'the see revised list! I like Elisabeth. Prefer Lisbeth though or Elisa

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 12/03/2017 15:19

Bombay I also like it :)

sauvignon Do you think so? Hmm. interesting. Thanks :)

willconcern

Thanks. I don't like Lisbeth (too much like Elspeth. I'm related to a horrible and hypocritical Elspeth) and Elisa sounds too much like Lisa.

Brollsdolls · 12/03/2017 16:12

Eliana

Mathena · 12/03/2017 16:18

Like Susannah, louisa, annabel (not annabella - too frilly with extra a)
Millicent is ok imo! Not sure but i dont dislike.
Love Marielle! (Another poster suggested)
serena is ok
carina - a car.

Arielle/a just too disney

Mathena · 12/03/2017 16:19

Also like Elena not Helena. My tastes are very normal. Araminta dreadful. The worst by far.
Antonia has lots of nns. Ana. Tania. Tonia. Anya. So versatile.

daisypond · 12/03/2017 16:32

Elena is quite a "foreign" spelling to my ears - very Spanish/Italian/Greek. Which is fine if that's what you want. I prefer Helena, but you'll get problems on how it's pronounced - Helen-a or Hel-ay-na.

FourKidsNotCrazyYet · 12/03/2017 16:33

My daughter is called Elaina (Elaine-ah) . Out of interest is Eliana pronounced Ellie-are-na? I actually think most of your names are pretty.

PageNowFoundFileUnderSpartacus · 12/03/2017 16:37

Susanna/h - ok, nothing special
Arielle - quite like this
Millicent - I like Millie but less keen on this. Makes me think of maiden aunts
Helena - my favourite from your choices, elegant, agree with your DH about the Hel-ayn-a pronunciation
Eliana - nope
Amynta - nope
Serena - dislike
Louisa - lovely, 2nd favourite choice
Annabella - reminds me of posh girls in Tatler who are snapped because they have famous parents
Annabelle - dislike but because of unpleasant person I know with this name
Erika - okay but glad you've been persuaded to the Erica spelling
Antonia - prefer Antoinette, Antonia sounds middle aged.

Really love a PP's suggestion of Aurelia.

CakeRattleandRoll · 12/03/2017 16:39

Just read your revised list and my two favourites (Carina and Eliana) have gone! And what happened to Daphne? I like that too. Of the others, my favourite is Erica.

ThoraGruntwhistle · 12/03/2017 16:49

Aww shame Eliana is gone, I thought it was lovely. I will now have to say either Susannah or Elisabeth, which is very pretty with the S instead of Z.

ChippieBeanAndHorro · 12/03/2017 17:06

Shoot.

Daphne was supposed to go on that list.

I also like Eliana. I feel like it's a beautiful name, like a fairy tale princess. But it's just too whimsical and frilly, if that makes sense. Although it's a shame, because it is really very beautiful. Plus, the two possibly meanings are lovely and I like the fact that it's a name that sounds beautoful in Italian (my mother's first language).

Unless I feel in the mood for a fairytale when the LO is born? Probably not going to be Eliana...

Carina is one of my favourites. But if the name starts with car and if there's literally a car called (toyota) carina? Then that's just a bit too much "car", unfortunately. Which is a shame, because I do truly love it. But yeah, it's a child, not a motorised vehicle... (grumble. Why did toyota have to do that? Idiots.)

OP posts:
ChippieBeanAndHorro · 12/03/2017 17:07

Although, saying goodbye to Eliana does make me a bit sad.

But I feel like having two girls, Clarissa and Eliana? THe Eliana sounds so overwhelmed by the sound of Clarissa.

Plus, the LO's name will be long, complicated, weird and imo quite harsh sounding. So, a very soft and frilly name? Wouldn't that be weird?

OP posts:
FatOldBag · 12/03/2017 17:09

As harsh as possible you say?

Elisabeth - Nice, fine with an S
Susanna/h - It's not the 80s anymore.
Millicent - God no, this is an awful sounding name.
Helena - Lovely
Amynta - People will think you can't spell Araminta, also just no.
Serena - Meh, I've heard worse.
Louisa - Nice
Erica - Again, the 80s have finished now.
Antonia - Toni for short ...just like the 80s, again!

FatOldBag · 12/03/2017 17:12

Daphne is truly awful. 30 years ago for a Scooby-do character, fine. Now, not so much.

I wouldn't be sad at losing Eliana either tbh, it doesn't sound nice or princess to me! She'd end being plain old Ellie anyway.
