I actually quite like both. If you want a more uncommon name then i'd go for Asher.

I've never really liked Jay and can imagine it sounding horrible in my accent some accents.

I love the name Asher. I know two adult Jays and with with both of them it's a nn for longer J names, so to me it doesn't feel like a name in it's own right.

Asher is much nicer. I'd presume that Jay was just an initial for something if I heard it. Or short for Jason.

Jay is nice as nn for something else, but not as a name on it's own.

I know a teenager called Jay which isn't short for anything and I like it but prefer Asher for reasons people have mentioned above.

Not keen on Jay, as said above, to me it's the nn for Jason. Asher reminds me of 'brimful of asha' and I dislike the nn Ash. Too reminiscent of the awful name Ashley.
How about Archer?
