What do you think of the Welsh name Anwen? We are not Welsh but feel it's a beautiful name. Possible nickname Annie. Thoughts?

Beautiful! Love it and nickname Annie is very sweet too.

highinthesky · 07/03/2017 19:26

I love the nickname Anni (we use this too, for a different name).

Our views are always coloured by our experiences. The Alwen I knew (not quite the same, but similar) is a ghastly bitch. Sorry.

Friends named their daughter Arwen, it's a beautiful name- Anwen too

Roseandbee · 07/03/2017 19:28

Is it pronounced an when?
my worry is my first thought was an when what? Is it maybe pronounce differently?

Arwen might be a good option if that bothers you

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/03/2017 19:31

Beautiful name.

ClaryIsTheBest · 07/03/2017 20:15

Cute.

Very Arwen (which is how I'd pronounce it. Just with an n...) but this isn't a bad thing. I like it :)

MikeUniformMike · 07/03/2017 20:53

I think it's dated and I don't think Welsh speakers would choose it, but if you like it then why not. I like Ann and Annie.

Sophronia · 07/03/2017 22:00

I really like it.

CakeRattleandRoll · 07/03/2017 23:39

Love it. Really wanted it for DD, but couldn't persuade DH.

Joeybee · 08/03/2017 00:08

It's a sweet name, and I think you can use it in the UK even if you are not Welsh. Anwen sounds both sweet and strong and kind. I like it.

RubyBluesey · 08/03/2017 00:18

really nice name...

llangennith · 08/03/2017 00:39

Here in Wales it's considered old fashioned, on a par with Gladys.

fatrabbit · 08/03/2017 01:01

Beautiful and Annie is a great nn.

Jooni · 08/03/2017 07:45

Love it!

sleeplessinderbyshire · 08/03/2017 07:47

Love it. My friend's daughter is anwen. It's lovely

Sapphireshadow · 08/03/2017 07:50

Lovely name.

PattyPenguin · 08/03/2017 12:14

I have a feeling it's due for a revival here in Wales.

Outside Wales, no-one knows it's considered old-fashioned, so no problem. It's also easy for non-Welsh-speakers to pronounce.

All in all, go for it!

While I'm here, it's time Olwen was revived (name from medieval legends).

soundsystem · 08/03/2017 18:32

I like it!

Wenchelda · 08/03/2017 20:23

I used to know a Rhianwen, which would be a variation and could still be nn Annie Smile I always thought it to be very unusual, without being weird!
