Saw this name the other day and have no idea how to pronounce it. I need to know as I may meet her soon. Is it Lisa? Louise? Leesha?
TIA

Cloeycat · 19/02/2017 14:32

It's pronounced Leesha

Coulibri · 19/02/2017 14:32

More or less Leesha, but the final sound is a schwa, so more LEE-shuh.

MiniMaxi · 19/02/2017 14:32

No idea I'm afraid but the Irish county Laois is pronounced Leesh as far as I'm aware - if that's any help!

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 19/02/2017 14:34

Yeah what Coulibri said. LEE-shuh

OurBlanche · 19/02/2017 14:35

LEE shuh here too!

llangennith · 19/02/2017 14:37

Well I was totally stumped!

carabos · 19/02/2017 14:42

Thank you!

Alternative spelling is Laoighse pronounced the same

Coulibri · 19/02/2017 14:45

The vowel cluster 'aoi' in Irish is pronounced, roughly, 'ee', e.g. Aoife, Laois, aois, Aoine, daoine.

Mrsknackered · 19/02/2017 16:11

Lee-shuh is correct however my friend Laoise has always just pronounced like Leesha.

VanillaSugar · 19/02/2017 16:14

So is Saoise pronounced Seesha? I always thought it was Sorsha! Like Jon Snow, I know nothing.

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 19/02/2017 16:15

No as Saoirse has an 'r' Smile so it's Seer-shuh or thereabouts.

WaitrosePigeon · 19/02/2017 16:16

Absolutely no idea.

Poorlybabysickday · 19/02/2017 16:18

So how do you pronounce Aoife? I have always wondered that Blush

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 19/02/2017 16:22

Ee-fuh. More or less. It's hard to write the 'e' sound it's kind of half way between 'fa' and 'fuh'

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/02/2017 16:27

Aoife is ee-fa

lorelairoryemily · 19/02/2017 16:41

Leesha, eefa, Seersha

Poorlybabysickday · 19/02/2017 17:44

Gosh in my head I have always pronounced Aoife as Aowifee Grin Shock

TheElephantofSurprise · 19/02/2017 17:47

OK, how about Eimear? How is that pronounced?
E-muh?
I-meer?

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 19/02/2017 17:49

Ee- mer.

dinosaurkisses · 19/02/2017 17:49

Eimear is "Ee-mur"

There's also Naoise which is pronounced Neesha

LovingLola · 19/02/2017 17:50

Eimear is pronounced ee-mer.

GentleOnMyMind · 20/02/2017 01:26

Lee-sha

TheElephantofSurprise · 20/02/2017 22:48

Thanks. Eimear /Eemuh. Got it.

KanyesVest · 20/02/2017 22:53

And to add to the confusion, Laoise can also be spelled Labhaoise.
