Saul?

So I'm expecting a baby boy in June and struggling a bit with names. Our surname is quite long winded so I would really like something short and simple (preferably 1 syllable) but also a name that isn't commonly used that you don't hear very often. I really like Joel, Noel, Dale, Lyle but DH has ruled all of these out, however one name we both like is Saul... My only concern with this is does it sound very religious? Neither of us are religious in the slightest however everyone that I have run the name Saul by say they would assume he was Jewish. I can't decide if this matters or not? I would appreciate any feedback on the name or any similar names that I haven't yet thought of. Thanks!

It is very religious, but I don't think it's as obvious as other names like Moses and Noah.

Slash from Guns N' Roses' real name is Saul. Pretty great namesake, and it hasn't seemed to hold him back at all. Smile

KlingybunFistelvase · 18/02/2017 11:00

I really like it!

NameChange30 · 18/02/2017 11:03

Great choice! DH and I had exactly the same dilemma and we decided to go for it Smile

Here's my thread, in case you're interested in what people said about the name Saul:
Toby, Robin or Saul?

BigFatBollocks · 18/02/2017 11:07

I love it! If baby number 2 to had have been a boy, I had chosen Saul but alas I had a girl and decided Saul wouldn't have suited her. Saul means sun I think and when u say it, it sounds like Soul which I think is super cool! Smile

Jooni · 18/02/2017 11:20

I don't think it matters at all. Noah, Elijah and Reuben would have been seen the same way 15 years ago but no one makes any connections there now. Saul is nice, go for it if you both like it.

ForeverLivingMyArse · 18/02/2017 11:21

It's all good man!

Joinourclub · 18/02/2017 11:22

Saul is a million times better than Noel, Dale or Kyle! Go for it!

Frazzled2207 · 18/02/2017 11:22

I like it. Also like Seth.

Chocolatecake12 · 18/02/2017 12:01

I know a really lovely boy called Saul.
Great name !!

avaj · 18/02/2017 12:03

Saul is lovely.
I also like;
Seth
Reid
Cole

Thank you for the feedback, feeling alot better about the name! Good point about all the Noahs/Ruebens etc.

I like the suggestion of Seth but our surname ends in 'eth' so wouldn't really go!

Also Slash as a namesake is a huge positive!

My SIL suggested this name for our baby. I can't stand it, sorry :(

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 18/02/2017 14:17

I think it's a great name OP.

LOVE Saul. It was at the top of the list for DC2 if it was a boy (it's a girl). DC1 is Abel - again a strong biblical name and I am a staunch atheist! So don't worry about that side of things too much - just go for what you like (and agree on)! Someone will always have a critique or disagree on a baby's name (my MIL for one - but sod them!)

Wishing you all the best! Smile

TheCakes · 18/02/2017 14:30

Lovely name. Biblical names are fine - a generation ago Joshua and Jacob would have seemed very religious, but they aren't now.
I say go for it, if you love it.

RuthB4 · 18/02/2017 18:23

I agree. It's lovely and doesn't make me think you must be religious. Go for it!

SaudadeObama · 18/02/2017 18:39

Great choice!

Ordinarily · 18/02/2017 19:25

Saul is a really nice name, and is reasonably popular but not faddy.

Biblical names don't seem either "religious" or not to me. I don't think Daniel, James, Adam, Luke, Joshua, Samuel, Matthew, Jacob, Felix, Ethan, Martha, Jemima, Naomi, Ruth, Eve, Tabitha or Rachel sound "religious" even though they're all Biblical names, and Saul fits in fine with those.

Montsti · 18/02/2017 20:32

I would assume you were Jewish too but who cares?? If you love the name, go for it!

Fwiw although Noah is a biblical name, it has become very popular so loses its biblical associations IMO.

lljkk · 18/02/2017 20:37

I didn't know it was religious.
We know a 13yo Saul his mother is weird but not unpleasantly so. Saul is fine.

cookielove · 18/02/2017 20:39

I love it!

We called our son a religious name that has been mentioned on this thread. We are both atheist and didn't know until we have left the hospital that it was religious name 😂😂

BikeRunSki · 18/02/2017 20:40

My fantasy boy twins are called Saul and Seth.

I wouldn't worry about the religious side. Many, many well used names are biblical names. Peter, Paul, Isaac, Reuben, Rebecca, Sarah, Samuel.

Sophronia · 18/02/2017 22:32

I like it!
