Which name do you prefer Aengus or Alexander (will probably just use Alex)?

Is Aengus pronounced like Angus?

Ordinarily · 10/02/2017 10:49

Alexander

KlingybunFistelvase · 10/02/2017 10:55

Aengus by miles and miles! It's beautiful, unusual and I love the Yeats connection.

Alexander is v nice but nowhere near as nice as Aengus imho.

BackforGood · 10/02/2017 10:59

I've never seen / heard of Aengus..... It did occur to me to wonder if you'd had a nervous twitch on your keyboard when writing Angus Grin

For my (English) eyes, I'd definitely go for Alexander.

RedSauce · 10/02/2017 11:08

Alexander

Helspopje · 10/02/2017 11:10

Alex

Angus reminds me of Aberdeen angus pies and beef cattle

ExplodedCloud · 10/02/2017 11:14

I thought it was a typo too, sorry. It sounds vaguely medical to my unfiltered brain so I pick Alexander

ExplodedCloud · 10/02/2017 11:15

Uncultured obviously. Auto correct is unfiltered.

user1476527566 · 10/02/2017 11:20

Smile Thank you for your messages. Aengus is the Irish spellling of Angus. I thought it was a bit different and not so much like the beef or Anus!!

I like Alex but it is very popular with boys and girls at the moment. My boy is very much a boy and would very rarely use Alexander.

My alex (if my oh and his family wouldve blinking well consented wouldve been a sandy as is usual in rural scotland

The child concerned has beautiful white blonde hair and would've made a great sandy. They were horrified and said that sandy is a female name so was overruled.

Lovelilies · 10/02/2017 11:26

He's newborn?
How can you know he'd never use Alexander? Very much a boy is an odd thing to say 🙄

HaveCourageAndBeKind · 10/02/2017 11:29

Alexander is used by my Alexander! He is never, ever Alex. He hates it, and we use a different diminutive form of the name.
Aengus looks horrible to me, Angus is better but phonetically they're both like anus, be honest.

Sophronia · 10/02/2017 12:50

Aengus. It's more interesting than Alex.

Ohyesiam · 10/02/2017 13:23

Aengus is lovely ( so is Alexander, but not so gorgeous), very classical and romantic.

BoboBunnyH0p · 10/02/2017 14:50

Alexander but for the nn I would go for Lex or Xander, there are a lot of Alex's around.

Mclaren37 · 14/02/2017 07:57

Much much prefer Angus (prefer this sp.) over Alex, which is nice but a bit unexciting. Angus is a brilliant name.

KlingybunFistelvase · 14/02/2017 09:11

I think Aengus and Angus are different names, pronounced differently. I prefer Aengus, but love Angus too. Aengus is more like Ayn-gus or En-gus (I think, though I'm not an Irish speaker so may need picked up on that pronunciation)!

Look up The Song of Wandering Aengus by Yeats if you're interested. I think it's beautiful.

MrsMeeseeks · 14/02/2017 09:54

My boy is very much a boy

Hmm
leghoul · 16/02/2017 01:09

Alexander - lovely, classic, international, versatile
Aengus too close to fungus for me

Alexander - fab name.

dinosaurkisses · 17/02/2017 14:40

Yy to previous posters who advised that Aengus and Angus are pronounced differently- there's a bloke on RTE called Aengus and it sounds very close to anus to my childish, non-gaelgoir ears

reuset · 17/02/2017 14:41

Alexander
