Thoughts on Eloi?

Thanks very much :)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
CherryAmes · 07/02/2017 03:52

Weren't they above ground with the Morlocks living underground and catching them to eat Confused

PhoenixJasmine · 07/02/2017 04:09

Did you miss off the end of the name?

Yes the Eloi are a 'fictional post-human race' in HG Wells The Time Machine. Maybe you'd like to consider Ferengi, Quagaar or Ewok as alternatives Grin?

Facetiousness aside, Eloise is a lovely name as is Elodie, or Eli/Elijah for a boy.

PhoenixJasmine · 07/02/2017 04:11

It is most likely the insomnia talking but Ewok is starting to sound like a feasible name to my brain right now. Maybe I should get a kitten and call it that to spare any future child.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 07/02/2017 04:12

Google says Eloi is also a French/Catalan boy's name so I'd guess that's more what the OP has in mind.

CherryAmes · 07/02/2017 04:18

Insomnia here too. My delightful children were discussing yesterday, whether Ewoks fling dirt or poo...

Sorry not able to add much to the discussion.

GinIsIn · 07/02/2017 04:50

I would think HG Wells, or that you meant Eli and just had a really strong West Country accent.... sorry!

PhoenixJasmine · 07/02/2017 04:57

Probably either or both, depending on the occasion.

SuperBeagle · 07/02/2017 05:09

It sounds like Kath and Kim saying "Eli".

clearsommespace · 07/02/2017 05:44

I like this name in French but ruled it out for DS because it would be incorrectly pronounced by the English side of the family.
A quick search tells me there is a variant Eligius which I think is quite cool but (having grown up with a different name that people always get wrong) I would never give to my DC.

Jooni · 07/02/2017 07:40

How is it pronounced? I'm guessing "el-WAH" like the French, but I suspect it would get butchered quite a lot here.

How about Elio? Elia/Elias?

SoupDragon · 07/02/2017 07:46

I have no idea how to pronounce it and it looks unfinished.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2017 07:48

I suspect it would get butchered quite a lot here.

It would certainly get butchered by me!

I was thinking El-of... Ell-oh-ee... have to say Ell-wah didn't cross my mind.

Obviously once I'd been told I'd get it right though.

Tartyflette · 07/02/2017 07:48

If it's pronounced ell-wah it sounds fine but to my ear, eel-oy sounds ugly, a bit like eli in a strong Brummie accent.

AllTheLight · 07/02/2017 07:49

For a boy or a girl?

CancellyMcChequeface · 07/02/2017 08:15

My first thought was '...and Morlocks' too, I'm afraid!

Don't like it, sorry.

nauticant · 07/02/2017 08:32

Like others my first thought was the very grim story of the Eloi and the Morlocks.

ThisProductContainsBatteries · 07/02/2017 08:33

Eh? Did you miss out the end of it?

LunaLoveg00d · 07/02/2017 08:34

I know an Eloy. Pronounced EE-loy. He is Spanish though.

NanooCov · 07/02/2017 08:37

I work with an Eloi. He's French and it suits him. If you're not French I wouldn't.

elQuintoConyo · 07/02/2017 08:44

It is pronounced el-oy in Catalan and I know several.

I have never seen Star Wars so wouldn't make that link.

CakeRattleandRoll · 07/02/2017 09:00

HG Wells, Morlocks, etc for me too.

PhoenixJasmine · 07/02/2017 09:03
  1. It's HG Wells The Time Machine, not Star Wars
  1. You've never seen Star Wars!!!?!???
Soubriquet · 07/02/2017 09:05

How do you pronounce it?

Cos it sounds like a really hardened up version of Eli.... to me

Ee-loy
