We have DS who is 2 called Murray, expecting baby #2 and trying to draw up a shortlist. Is Morven too obscure for a girl? DH likes it but I can't decide either way.

Love it. There's a mountain called Morven in Scotland.

I used to live near that mountain :)

There was a girl in the village called Morven and I liked it.

I love Morven. It's got a really nice, serious, strong feel to it.

Jooni · 30/01/2017 20:58

I like it, especially with Murray. It always sounds a bit sinister to me, but in a cool way Smile

I don't mind morven but not overly keen. What about Eilidh, Catriona, Fiona?

nothruroad · 30/01/2017 22:46

I love the name Morven. I think it goes well with Murray too.

inlectorecumbit · 30/01/2017 22:48

I know several Morvens-- including DN. The ages are 5-35, It is not an uncommon name in Scotland

Morven is such a lovely name.

midsomermurderess · 31/01/2017 19:34

I like it and the Morvern peninsula is very beautiful, although that might be more compelling a reason to use it is you are Scottish.

midsomermurderess · 31/01/2017 19:36

Sorry, wrong spelling.

I've never heard it before but I don't like it, sorry. Instinctive thought=Mordor/coven/witchy things. But I didn't know it was traditional Scottish so probably doesn't have those connotations for others...

I prefer other names suggested by John

NC1nightstand · 31/01/2017 19:48

Love it! I have done ever since I read and then watched Morvern Callar. ( hellooo Onceatimeinavest)
I know the spelling is different but I imagine it's the same pronunciation. It's beautiful and unusual - probably not unusual in Scotland. Grin

caffelatte100 · 31/01/2017 21:10

Quite like it. I think Mathilda sounds better with Morven though....

NeverTwerkNaked · 01/02/2017 11:35

How about Morven as the middle name? I think it sounds a bit too matchy with Murray

ithakabythesea · 01/02/2017 11:40

Morven isn't common in Scotland, but it isn't unusual either, if you see what I mean. I think it is a beautiful name, strong, dignified and easy to spell - its got it all.

I wouldn't worry about being 'matchy' - people forget when they name their children that they are not children for very long. Most of her life will be spent as an independent adult & people she meets won't immediately know she has a brother called Murray, if at all. You are bringing up 2 separate people, not a perpetual twosome.

Stickaforkinimdone · 01/02/2017 11:50

Can't help thinking it sounds like some sort of pharmaceutical brand

MortalEnemy · 01/02/2017 12:16

I like it. My main association (slight variant, but I assume the same name) is with the novel Morvern Callar by Alan Warner, which is a brilliant, but quite in your face, novel, if that would bother you. The main character starts off the novel discovering that her boyfriend has committed suicide in their kitchen, doesn't report it, ends up chopping up his body and hiding it in the mountains, publishing his novel under her own name, and spending the advance going to raves in Spain. And there's a sequel. Grin

First time I've heard the name and initially thought it seemed like a surname now used as a first name trend. But the more I see it, the more it grows on me. However it really is far too close to Murray and so I think you should choose another unless you absolutely adore Morven. Murray and Morven sound like some kind of kids entertainer duo I'm afraid.
