Why is Peggy not more popular?

I was just reading about Peggy Ashcroft and it made me think.

It's the perfect meeting of the "old lady name" trend (Iris, Sylvia, Elsie, Maude etc) and what I think of as "smiley" names (Poppy, Molly, Ellie, Chloe etc)

So why am I not meeting any tiny Peggys?

My nearly 10 year old is called Peggy. Its not short for anything either.

greendaisie · 18/02/2024 21:42

Peggy is indeed awful and only one letter from Piggy Blush

greendaisie · 18/02/2024 21:43

I assume Peggy is short for Peg?

Scottyme · 19/02/2024 11:30

I love the names old lady names Peggy, Edith, Mabel, Marnie

Westwindworries · 19/02/2024 14:59

I know a teenage Peigi (Scots Gaelic). I prefer Peigi to Peggy, though I don't think it would work outside Scotland.

I love it. Was on our list

I like Peggy I like Margaret, Meg and Maggie. Not keen on Megan or Margot, they seem a bit faddy.

The former PM was Hilda until she was an adult.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 22/02/2024 17:34

It’s the combination of the bilabial plosive sound with a velar plosive. It has a hard, quite guttural effect IMO.

Rotebeete · 22/02/2024 17:51

Margaret is nice, as is Margareta.

But Peggy sounds like Piggy and has no resemblance to Margaret at all.

KirstenBlest · 22/02/2024 18:00

I like Greta too. I'd like Daisy but it's a bit twee..

ladycarlotta · 22/02/2024 19:26

I like Peggy. I don't know why it doesn't share recent popularity with names like Molly, which have that same kind of traditional girl-next-door energy. I knew one Peggy growing up who must be in her early 30s by now, and one who is about six. I also know a couple of Maggies which I also really like.

HahaBooHiss · 22/02/2024 20:12

Peggies are teeth, so I would just think of that when looking and my baby 😂

I do like the name though, it is lovely. But folk here have posted some good points. I know a Peggy and she’s nice.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 23/02/2024 09:33

Sounds like pigs, eggs, and clothes pegs.
It's really not very nice.

Grazie234 · 25/02/2024 15:35

It was a pet name for vulva/ vagina when I was growing up so was always a no no (Peggy and Willy!). I guess came it came from the Irish Gee.

Soowoo · 25/02/2024 22:26

Our cat was called Pegatha (Peggy for short) I’ve no idea why she was called this, but I do love the name!

Viviennemary · 25/02/2024 22:35

Its not popular because its a pretty dire name.
