We are expecting our second boy, but are struggling with name ideas.

So far we have narrowed it down to a short list of 5... Oliver, Dominic, Sebastian, Samuel and Alexander... but can't seem to narrow it down any further! We keep thinking we've found a favourite, but then the next day decide on a different favourite!

Big brother's name is Matthew :-)

Which name do you prefer? Do you think any sound better as a little brother for Matthew? Any other suggestions we might not have thought of?!

Thank you for your help in advance!

All 5 are lovely.

If you really love them all equally I'd go with the least popular. Which is probably Dominic?

whirliebird · 06/01/2017 18:44

Matthew and Samuel go nice together :-)

juneau · 06/01/2017 18:47

They're really nice names, but all very popular at the moment, apart from Dominic. I don't know any little Dominics, so I'd probably go with that!*

*not that it's any guarantee that there won't be another one in his reception class.

AlwaysTeaTime · 06/01/2017 18:48

Think of what they will inevitably be shortened to. Ollie, Dom/Nick, Seb, Sam, Alex. Now which of those do you prefer? I love Sebastian and it's less popular than the others (except Dominic)

Pixilicious · 06/01/2017 18:51

Sebastian or Dominic

DramaAlpaca · 06/01/2017 18:52

My own choice would be Matthew & Oliver.

Agree with a pp, to help narrow it down, think of all the possible nicknames for the names you like and try them out with Matthew & the nickname he might end up with, for example say your DS1 gets called Matt:

Matt & Olly
Matt & Dom
Matt & Seb
Matt & Alex
Matt & Seb

AvaBird · 06/01/2017 18:55

I would go with Dominic.
Other names you might like: Owen, Noah, Henry, Crispin, Felix, Liam, Marcel, Henry, Roman, Maximilian, Vincent, William, James, Benjamin, Alexander, Benedict, Thomas, Isaac, Jacob or Levi.

Mrsjudelaw66 · 06/01/2017 19:03

Matthew and Sebastian are great names.

TheTartOfAsgard · 06/01/2017 19:09

Oliver works best.

Sophronia · 06/01/2017 19:15

Dominic

Glitterous · 06/01/2017 21:02

Dominic or Sebastian

We're drowning in Olivers and Alexander my way

PunkAssMoFo · 07/01/2017 07:05

Samuel is my favourite and goes best with Matthew.

Sebastian would be my second choice.

I hate Alexander for no particular reason.
Dominic is the omen.
Oliver is dull due to overuse.

Laineymc7 · 07/01/2017 07:22

Dominic or Sebastian. Although they are all lovely names.

Pluto30 · 07/01/2017 08:01

Dominic is the omen.

That's Damien. Smile

OP, I like Samuel the best and I think it goes best with Matthew.

I also like Sebastian.

Oliver is lovely, but very, very popular.

I have never been a fan of Alexander, and Dominic is a bit outdated, IMO.

1horatio · 07/01/2017 09:01

I really like Oliver and Alexander.

I don't like Dominic, but I'm not sure why...

MollyHuaCha · 07/01/2017 09:09

All lovely names.

Cakingbad · 10/01/2017 00:59

Samuel is my favourite.

What about Jonathan, Stephen, Lawrence.

MitzyLeFrouf · 10/01/2017 01:05

Alex

SausageSoda · 10/01/2017 16:44

Sebastian and Dominic are my favourites in that order and both go well with Matthew imo.

PostTruthEra · 10/01/2017 16:52

Samuel. It's an awesome name. Grin

Love Dominic , I also love the name Joseph , Jeremy , Harrison , Hamilton Smile

Allalonenow · 11/01/2017 00:31

They are all nice, standard names. Alexander and Oliver are both very popular, and Sebastian almost as popular.

From Samuel and Dominic I prefer Dominic.

mum2bejen · 15/01/2017 13:01

Thank you for all of your help and suggestions!

We've narrowed it down, but we think we have a top two now. Dominic is the favourite from the original list, but we think our number one name is Ryan :-)

Thank you Buttercup!! I was reading your suggestions to my husband, and that's the one that stood out for us (even my 3 year old chipped in saying "Mummy, Ryan is the best name, I like it!!") and since then it has stuck :-)
