How do you pronounce Aaron?

This is our number one fave for baby due in Feb. However me and DH pronounce it differently. I'm not bothered as I think however it's pronounced it's a nice name. However DH really dislikes the way I pronounce it. I say "air un" and he says "ar un". I think many people would also say "air un" and DH says he would find that annoying. We have discussed changing the spelling e.g. to Aren but I like the original spelling better.

How would you pronounce it? Ideas for an alternate spelling or alternative name that sounds like DHs pronunciation? We would go for a similar sounding name beginning with A :)

HunterHearstHelmsley · 28/12/2016 07:56

SoupDragon · 28/12/2016 07:57

Oh, this will polarise MN, its been done before!

I am in the Air-on camp.

PeoniesPony · 28/12/2016 07:57

Rhymes with Karen

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2016 07:57

Like you but I've noticed loads of people pronouncing it the other way recently.

Cookingongas · 28/12/2016 07:59

And like your dh I prickle to hear air run, despite liking ah run

Horseshoe1 · 28/12/2016 07:59

I know a grown up one who pronounces it Air-un. I guess it can be either way.

MrsBellefleur · 28/12/2016 08:00

Ah-run to rhyme with Karen here too.

FourToTheFloor · 28/12/2016 08:00

I once heard a guy called Aaron say his name was Erin. It really confused me! I say a-ron

Artus · 28/12/2016 08:00

Air un

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2016 08:00

Why cooking? As far as I know everyone pronounced it like that when I was a child. When did it change?

SarfEast1cated · 28/12/2016 08:01

I thought it was Air On too - If you use Arran spelling it will always be pronounced the same way.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2016 08:02

That said there was a programme we were watching , maybe 24, and it took me ages to work out why there was a guy called Erin

SarfEast1cated · 28/12/2016 08:02

Good question stealth when did it change?

Bigfatgrinch · 28/12/2016 08:03

I'm in Scotland, and it might be an accent thing but can't imagine saying it the way you pronounce it. I would say it roughly how your husband does but maybe more like "Ah-rin"

Mysterycat23 · 28/12/2016 08:04

Forgot to say we also discovered Arlen but I'm concerned it's too unusual (as in he will be bullied and spend his life explaining it. I have an unusual name and people struggle to pronounce it, really affected me and I was bullied for it so don't want my baby to have to go through the same)

Arran is nice thank you!

AIR-run. To rhyme with scare run.

Chokehold · 28/12/2016 08:05

Aron = a-ron

Aaron = air-ron

user1477282676 · 28/12/2016 08:05

Air-uhn

GinIsIn · 28/12/2016 08:06

Ah-run here. Have never heard anyone pronounce it Air-On? Confused

ScarletSienna · 28/12/2016 08:08

I grew up with an Aaron pronounced Airon and since known a few people called Aaron that rhymes with Karen. I like both pn but slightly prefer Airon. Both are known pn but I think Karen Aaron is more used now.

Raines100 · 28/12/2016 08:09

There are 2 correct pronunciations.

Air-run is the original biblical pronunciation.
Arr-un became popular because it was Elvis Presley ' middle name.

Arran is a Scottish name (Isle of Arran), pronounced the second way, so that would ensure your DH's preferred pronunciation, although I suspect many will automatically spell it Aaron anyway.

In real life, I have never met an Air-run and find it clumsy to say. If it were me, I'd spell it Aaron, pronounced Arran, and be happy to correct people.
