Irena (eye-ree-na)

My mums name is Irene, her mum (my Nana) was Irene.

I love other more popular names too. My first choice was Charlotte, nn Lottie which we both love.

I've mentioned Irene a few times but OH always said 'yes, as a middle name it would be cute.' We were at the cemetery yesterday putting some Christmassy flowers down for my Nana (Irene) and OH looked at the grave stone and almost yelled 'WHAT ABOUT IRENA!!!'
Think it's really sweet that he's thinking of including my mum and nana's name, but a little unsure.

Any opinions?

I'm not keen and think a lot of people would just think Irene anyway.

Much prefer charlotte/Lottie

Largemelons · 24/12/2016 14:41

I think it's quite sweet and there won't be many around. It's a family name so is extra special. How about Irena Charlotte?

MilkybarMars · 24/12/2016 15:33

I know one pronounced EE-ren-a so not like Irene at all

DollyPlastic · 24/12/2016 15:39

I like it. I'd try for Rene as a nn.

CakeRattleandRoll · 24/12/2016 15:40

I like it.

musicalmama · 24/12/2016 15:44

I've heard it pronounced in a couple of younger ones as i- ren-a. The I pronounced as you teach little ones to spell phonetically. You could add in an extra n to make it a bit different? X

FatOldBag · 24/12/2016 15:46

I like it, it's a lovely name. Definitely nicer than Irene for a baby. It's very popular in Russia.

Kelsey28 · 24/12/2016 16:44

Once taught a lovely Portuguese girl named Irina and reminds me of the model Irina Shayk.

neonrainbow · 24/12/2016 16:47

I like it.

How about spelling it Irina?

Capepoint · 24/12/2016 18:31

I think it sounds lovely and has a very special meaning to you and your family.

Pluto30 · 24/12/2016 20:13

I prefer the spelling Irina.

But I do think it's a bit outdated, like Irene.

Shadowboy · 24/12/2016 20:15

Like it. Very Russian actually. Love the nn too.

littledinaco · 24/12/2016 20:16

I much prefer Irina spelling. It's nice and unusual. Charlotte/Lottie is really boring, sorry.

Prettybaffled · 24/12/2016 20:18

Love name and meaning in Greek - peace iirc. Knew a Greek one spelled Irini.

ToffeeAppleDragon · 24/12/2016 20:21

Beautiful name

howtheheckdoidealwiththis · 24/12/2016 20:28

I think it's beautiful. Ir-ren-ah.
An elegant name.

JudgeJudySheidlin · 24/12/2016 21:23

Like it when it's phonetically pronounced as Ee-ree-na. Don't like it when it's pronounced I-ree-na.

Great choice for something a little different

hoddtastic · 25/12/2016 16:27

love it, i have a mate called Irene, we call her Reeny.

MikeUniformMike · 25/12/2016 17:58

Suggest you spell it Irina. It's pretty and has a nice meaning.

I like Irene pronounced eye-REEnee but most people would say eye-REEN.

Would you pronounce it Irr Ayna or Eye-REEna?

MikeUniformMike · 25/12/2016 18:06

oops, silly me. Irena pron. Eye-REE-na is lovely.
