Must make a decision today...

My DS is 1year old and his name is Edward James. We liked 2 names Edward and George, decided to choose Edward as his first name, but decided not to put George as a middle name because with the surname his initials would abbreviate to EGG (now I think it was a silly reason). We decided to register him as Edward James, just because it sounded nice.

Today is the last day to amend his BC. I like both George and James for a middle name, but marginally prefer George.
My question is:

  • shall I change the name to Edward George (but feel nervous about amending his Birth Certificate)
or
  • leave it as Edward James (which is much easier, no amendment on BC, but what if I regret not using George as mn)?

I suppose only I can decide what's best, but just wanted to see other people opinions as I can't make up my mind. By the way, my husband doesn't mind either way, so it's up to me.

Thanks in advance!

It's his middle name. Just leave it.

SweepTheHalls · 14/12/2016 09:50

Leave it, save George for another child Smile

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/12/2016 09:50

Leave it as Edward James.

INeedNewShoes · 14/12/2016 09:53

I personally would leave it as it is at this stage.

Very few people use their middle names anyway so I imagine this will seem less significant as time goes on.

Also, it isn't a great idea to give children initials that spell something 'funny'. If other kids do pick up on it for some reason there's likely to be some teasing. This wouldn't bother some kids but others might react badly to it perpetuating the teasing.

I also think that Edward James sounds great, and that Edward George doesn't flow quite so well.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/12/2016 09:54

I imagine he may well get nicknamed Egg if his school mates clock it.

GoofyTheHero · 14/12/2016 09:56

It's just a middle name. I'd leave it. Edward James and Edward George are much of a muchness.

CanandWill · 14/12/2016 09:58

What they all said. James is a lovely name.

HeyRoly · 14/12/2016 09:58

I agree you should leave it. Middle names are so unimportant in day to day life, it's really not going to make a jot of difference whether you change it or not, so save yourself the hassle (and the need to explain it to people) and leave it Smile

Thank you ladies. I know it's only a middle name, I also agree Edward James flows better.
I suppose the only reason I stress about it so much is that if one day he doesn't like his first name and wants to be known by middle name, I would prefer the name George?

That's so unlikely though. And James is a perfectly nice name.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/12/2016 10:05

Egg is a cool nickname anyway, imho

Sophronia · 14/12/2016 10:11

I'd leave it as Edward James

GoofyTheHero · 14/12/2016 10:48

I suppose the only reason I stress about it so much is that if one day he doesn't like his first name and wants to be known by middle name, I would prefer the name George?

But he might prefer James?

Pluto30 · 14/12/2016 11:23

I'd leave it.

I haven't used my middle name since I realised you didn't have to use it. I never include it in anything, and it's not a "bad" middle name, just kinda pointless...

Plus, even if he doesn't like Edward, he may well prefer James to George.

Artandco · 14/12/2016 11:32

I would leave it now as an year on and only middle

Have another child in future and can use George. Or a cat or goldfish

SausageSoda · 14/12/2016 14:38

I'd leave it. I don't think anyone apart from close family and my DP even knows what my middle name is.

Many thanks to everyone who took time to reply. I've decided to leave everything as is and can happily move on now! X
