How to spell the name

We don't yet know the sex of our baby, but for a boy we came across the name Malachi. We both love the name, however the alternate spelling if Malachi is Malakai. I prefer the former and OH prefers the latter. OH is now making a big deal of how it should be more modern and less biblical, as people will pronounce it as Mala-Chi. (OH can't spell for toffee). OH also likes the name Aidan but wishes to spell it with as Ayden, so it was instantly crossed off the list.
Am I being unreasonably hormonal or should I stick to my guns? Which sounds and looks better to all of you?

Stick to your guns, I say. What looks modern now will soon look dated and a bit naff and that his parents couldn't spell.

I think Malakai looks like something off the Lion King. Malachi is nicer looking.

Loyly · 08/12/2016 11:06

Malachi

ChewedUpRope · 08/12/2016 11:12

Tell him that spelling it Malakai is like spelling Michael as Maikull.

If he doesn't think that's ridiculous, LTB Grin

ScarletForYa · 08/12/2016 11:16

He admits he can't spell. He loses.

Lemonwhacker · 08/12/2016 11:18

Thank you! I was beginning to think I was going round the twist. Sadly this isn't the first and won't be the last thing we don't agree on. I'm sticking with Malachi ☺️

I actually tried to put this across to OH regarding their own name. I got back 'That might be how it sounds but it isn't how it's spelt' I could've cried with frustration 😂

I know someone who spells it Malachy
(not sure if that helps!)

Lemonwhacker · 08/12/2016 11:27

Santa the alternative spellings make my eyes bleed! 😭 Malachy is truly horrific to me 😂

Malakai is how it's spelt in the Pacific islands! Relevant if you ever plan on living in NZ or Australia.

BadToTheBone · 08/12/2016 11:28

Malachi, the k is just ridiculous, he'll spend his whole life having to spell it out. Actually it's a name that he probably will have to spell out anyway, but even the few who know how to spell it will need correcting too. What a pain for him.

Sophronia · 08/12/2016 12:33

Malachy is an Irish name pronounced mal-ah-kee, it has completely different origins to the Biblical name Malachi.

I think Malachi looks better than Malakai, so I'd stick with that.

GinevraPotter · 08/12/2016 13:37

Definitely Malachi. Malakai and Ayden are awful.

Myu5ername · 08/12/2016 14:48

Malachi.

And I only know of female Ayden's. Two of them.

Lemonwhacker · 08/12/2016 16:21

I just think the 'modern' spelling of Malakai and the way OH wants to spell Ayden are very council estate. Not that I'm a snob I just believe in proper spelling.

I probably sound like a horrible cow now 😂

SoupDragon · 08/12/2016 16:24

Malachi

And Ayden is just plain wrong. As is Aiden.

LineyReborn · 08/12/2016 16:25

I thought it was Malachai

LineyReborn · 08/12/2016 16:28

Lovely name, btw.

SausageSoda · 08/12/2016 16:45

The only spelling I know is Malachy. Malakai looks awful so definitely Malachi if it's a choice between the two.
