We are expecting DC2 and already have a William.
If this one is a boy we have said for ages we would like to call him Hamish.

BUT... We have a Mc name as DH's dad is Scottish, but we aren't, we are English living in England.

So do you think Hamish Mc.... is a bit too Scottish considering he won't be?

I love it! I'm Irish, not Scottish and would definitely consider using it. DH would veto though (boo)

It's my DS name and I love it. But his dad is Scottish so it works for us.

If you are worried about it how about James which is the English version of Hamish?

I wouldn't think twice about using it if it weren't for our surname. I love the name just not sure I love it with such a Scottish sounding surname.

DH is James which is another reason we were considering it, as a nod to his name.

We have a William and were strongly considering Hamish for DS2 but we also have a very Scottish surname despite being English and, in the end, decided he would get bored of being asked about it all the time! I do still love it though....maybe if we have another boy!!

I'm Scottish and know loads of non Scots with very Scottish names - think Calum McCalum type names. There's obviously some Scottish heritage there somewhere in the past so use the name if you like it. Worst thing is that he spends his time confusing people who ask where he's from, expecting Glasgow but get Surrey!! You like it, you use it!

I like it. So long as it's not Hamish McBeth, I say go for it.

Love the name Hamish and it wouldn't worry me about the surname, there is Scottish heritage after all. DD has a Scottish name and surname, despite her Scottish connection being only one great-grandparent!

If the baby is a girl we are going with Elodie, as my heritage is French.

I don't think it's ' too' Scottish at all. It's a great choice, don't feel you can't or shouldn't use it.

We have a Hamish and a Scottish surname (not Mc but still something that has its own tartan!) DH has Scottish blood but was born and bred in England. I am as English as they come. We occasionally get asked about the Scottish links but it's not ever really been a problem. and it's not really anyone else's business

I think Hamish is amazing and, while I see what you mean about having a Mc surname, I would still go for it and just 'own it'! Really it makes Hamish even more perfect for you. Oh and if you have a girl next Hamish and Elodie are fab together.

My older brother is a Hamish (we all have VERY Scottish names) but it wasn't cool when he was younger, it's only made a recent comeback. He's Scottish though. I like the name but I he will get a lot of 'I assume you're Scottish' kind of comments with a Mc surname when he's older.

Love it. I have a nephew called Hamish and I don't think he's set foot in the place.
