Strong girls' names

I'd love to ask for your thoughts on strong girls' names. I'm not madly keen on the Poppy/Millie/Esme girly names that are popular at the moment, and would like something strong and elegant.

(Not much to ask!)

We are adopting and never thought that we'd have the chance to name a child ourselves, but it's looking like we're about to be matched with a young baby whose name the social workers will advise us to change for security reasons (if we are lucky enough for the match to go ahead Smile)

Many thanks!

Fingers crossed for you xx

I read somewhere that a 'K' sound can be strong. Perhaps the kardashians have heard this too so any of their names if you could be tempted or perhaps

Camilla
Cornelia
Claudia

You could also look at list of top women in business and see if any jump out at you.

Like you I would like a strong name rather than soft or flowery so paying attention to letters / consonants in names. ( this sounds really stupid but I find names that end in 'ee' sound make my mouth start to form a smile at end so in my head seem softer ( Sophie, poppy, Emily Chloe etc) I seem to prefer ones that end with 'a' sound ( Diane, Claudia, Theresa )

Perhaps what sounds strong also depends on people you know/ experiences / your perception

Best of luck xxx

Camille, Jemima, Georgia, Margot, Cecelia, Agathe, Meredith, Stella. All strong names that I also love. I think a strong sounding name also has to have some style and whimsy to it for me to really like it. There are plenty of strong sounding but imo slightly unexciting girls names.

Really like the names on your list, I have a particular fondness for Greta as a NN for Margaret. Congratulations and all the best.

Congrats, I like Florence, and the shortened Flo. Margaret or Maggy is great too. I ended up calling by dd after her great granny who had huge character, Evelyn, she is certainly living up to her namesake !

Congratulations OP!
A great shortlist of names (though I would say that because both of my DD's names are in your list!)

🎉Fabulous news!!!🎉🍾🥂

My Godson came home at 5 weeks. We'd seen him twice before that, it broke our hearts to leave him each time but the hospital nurses were lovely. He's a strapping bloke in his mid 20's now, but it only seems 5 minutes ago.

If it were me, I'd call her MineAllMine or slightly more controversial ICantFuckingBelieveIt 😬

I'm so pleased for you 💐 Whatever you choose will be perfect.

I love Margaret (the nn Greta is fantastic, as pp. has suggested!).
Also love Florence and Margot very much, but Margaret just has more of an element of surprise to it. So cool.
(Frances is a little plain in comparison imo, but still a good name.)

Margaret is a terrific name and wildly underused these days. I also really like Marguerite.

Thank you all very much! I'm welling up!

Very interesting to see the love for Margaret...it's DP's favourite and my least favourite. Maybe I could be persuaded.

I have a very boring name and always wanted something a bit more glamorous...I worry that little Margaret would feel the same!

Would you shorten it to Maggie? Margaret isn't my favourite of your choices, but I love Maggie.

Your shortlist is beautiful, OP. Whatever you choose will be perfect for your daughter. I'm so glad the match is going ahead Flowers

In terms of the names, I like all of them, but for a more detailed opinion:

Florence - very pretty, range of shortenings which are all nice, popular ATM so almost everyone you meet will really like it.

Margot - my least favourite on your list.

Frances - beautiful. I love how elegant this name is, but hate Frankie and Fran.

Margaret - love the shortenings Maggie and Meg. Very feisty.

So, I would go for Florence or Margaret off your list. Have fun choosing!
