Strong girls' names

I'd love to ask for your thoughts on strong girls' names. I'm not madly keen on the Poppy/Millie/Esme girly names that are popular at the moment, and would like something strong and elegant.

(Not much to ask!)

We are adopting and never thought that we'd have the chance to name a child ourselves, but it's looking like we're about to be matched with a young baby whose name the social workers will advise us to change for security reasons (if we are lucky enough for the match to go ahead Smile)

Many thanks!

So...we've gone with Florence. Definitely on the girlier end of the spectrum but just felt right. Margaret plus surname would have been MIL's exact name, so in the end for us it had connotations of a different generation. But I still think it's lovely and elegant...

I'm so happy for you OP, you'll soon be a family 😄💐

Many congratulations on your little girl.
I love all on your shortlist except Florence. I would go for Frances or Margot- absolutely stunning and strong names.

Your shortlist is beautiful, OP. Whatever you choose will be perfect for your daughter. I'm so glad the match is going ahead Flowers

In terms of the names, I like all of them, but for a more detailed opinion:

Florence - very pretty, range of shortenings which are all nice, popular ATM so almost everyone you meet will really like it.

Margot - my least favourite on your list.

Frances - beautiful. I love how elegant this name is, but hate Frankie and Fran.

Margaret - love the shortenings Maggie and Meg. Very feisty.

So, I would go for Florence or Margaret off your list. Have fun choosing!

Would you shorten it to Maggie? Margaret isn't my favourite of your choices, but I love Maggie.

Thank you all very much! I'm welling up!

Very interesting to see the love for Margaret...it's DP's favourite and my least favourite. Maybe I could be persuaded.

I have a very boring name and always wanted something a bit more glamorous...I worry that little Margaret would feel the same!

Margaret is a terrific name and wildly underused these days. I also really like Marguerite.

I love Margaret (the nn Greta is fantastic, as pp. has suggested!).
Also love Florence and Margot very much, but Margaret just has more of an element of surprise to it. So cool.
(Frances is a little plain in comparison imo, but still a good name.)

🎉Fabulous news!!!🎉🍾🥂

My Godson came home at 5 weeks. We'd seen him twice before that, it broke our hearts to leave him each time but the hospital nurses were lovely. He's a strapping bloke in his mid 20's now, but it only seems 5 minutes ago.

If it were me, I'd call her MineAllMine or slightly more controversial ICantFuckingBelieveIt 😬

I'm so pleased for you 💐 Whatever you choose will be perfect.

Congratulations OP!
A great shortlist of names (though I would say that because both of my DD's names are in your list!)

Congrats, I like Florence, and the shortened Flo. Margaret or Maggy is great too. I ended up calling by dd after her great granny who had huge character, Evelyn, she is certainly living up to her namesake !

LittleIda · 13/01/2017 22:13

Sorry, Frances is my favourite of those.
