Don't want to go with Effy as it reminds me of that girl from SKINS, but I have always loved Effie. Opinions? xxxx

Horrible, sorry.

whifflesqueak · 04/12/2016 15:48

will it be short for something? I have a longish, traditional name that is shortened to something very like Effie, in fact I am often called it in error, but I am very pleased to have the "proper" name. Effie is a little cutesy.

MsGameandWatch · 04/12/2016 15:50

I think it's fluffy and weak sounding.

SoOverPeppa123 · 04/12/2016 15:54

I think of the girl from the film About a Boy. It sounds like a nick name.

Pidlan · 04/12/2016 15:55

Makes me think (childishly) of Eff off

Northernlurker · 04/12/2016 15:55

I know one. It's a dear little name for a baby but I do wonder slightly what will happen when she's grown up

OohhThatsMe · 04/12/2016 15:55

It makes me think of "Effing".

MitzyLeFrouf · 04/12/2016 15:57

Effie Gray. Think she was a Euphemia.

Effie is a bit insubstantial as a name. Not that I'm recommending Euphemia!

Pemba · 04/12/2016 15:58

I like it, but can't help thinking it should be short for something, but not sure what. Euphemia maybe (but that is a bit much!)

UnicornPee · 04/12/2016 16:00

I think it seems like it's associated with a swear word.

How about Elfie?

Pemba · 04/12/2016 16:01

Cross post with Mitzy. Thought of another one 'Elfine' which is nicer than Euphemia. If features in the book 'Cold Comfort Farm' but not sure if it was an existing name or made up by the author?

MollyHuaCha · 04/12/2016 16:03

I'm not too keen on Effie. I think it's because the word 'eff' is often used as an abbreviation for a swear word!

Brittanyspears · 04/12/2016 16:07

Get the Eff out of here

GreenRut · 04/12/2016 16:09

I love it, op! Was on my list.

RortyCrankle · 04/12/2016 16:11

Not keen it's a bit twee.

derxa · 04/12/2016 16:16

Very old fashioned Scottish name.

Astro55 · 04/12/2016 16:18

Hunger games had an Effie she wasn't a good character

peri89 · 04/12/2016 16:22

It does make me think of skins. Potentially cute for a child but definitely sounds like a nickname.

sodabreadjam · 04/12/2016 16:32

Sorry - don't like it.

It's not an attractive sound to me. I agree with others - it reminds me of the swearword. She would be teased at school.

I'm not a fan of giving nicknames as actual birth certificate names and the official name for Effie is apparently Euphemia. For me that's a step too far in terms of old lady names.

I don't think your daughter would thank you for it later. There are nicer names around.

lexatin · 04/12/2016 16:35

It's one of my favourite names from one of my favourite books (Effi Briest) ❤️❤️❤️

TheCakes · 04/12/2016 16:37

I like Aoife better.

carrotcakecupcake · 04/12/2016 16:44

I want to like it as I like a lot of "E" names (Edith, Edie, Elsie, Evie, etc) but it sounds like a nickname, or short for something? Kind of like it's missing something.

Littleelffriend · 04/12/2016 16:45

Love it, a traditional Scottish name, related to Elizabeth if I'm not mistaken

Tigersteeth · 04/12/2016 16:47

Will her middle name be Trinket?

(Effie Trinket is a key character in Hunger Games. Starts badly, redeems herself in the end!)

Shitonyoursofa · 04/12/2016 16:48

Love it
