Don't want to go with Effy as it reminds me of that girl from SKINS, but I have always loved Effie. Opinions? xxxx

Reading this is interesting to me as my DD2 is Effie and people usually say they like it, whilst this thread suggests it is pretty much universally hated.

Perhaps the key thing is that her real name is Elspeth and we shortened it to Effie as her sister who is 17 months older couldn't say Elspeth. However, I really only use Effie. I quite like the marmite element of it-and people don't forget it.

Cosmicglitterpug · 04/12/2016 22:28

And if YOU love it, name your child it. Which is what I think should always be the case. It's hardly ridiculous.

ConkerTriumphant · 04/12/2016 22:46

Olennas that's lovely!

PiggyPlumPie · 04/12/2016 22:51

Didn't Robin Williams say "Brace yourself Effie" in Mrs Doubtfire or am I thinking of something else? Grin

reindeerbitesback · 04/12/2016 23:57

I was Effy at school (pre skins and hunger games), my name is Fleur. I quite like it, but wouldn't like to be called it now at work/in a professional environment.

Effie is traditionally a nickname for Elizabeth (Effy from skins full name was Elizabeth if I remember correctly). But any name with an Eh or -f sound could potentially work. I wouldn't give Effie as a full name as it just doesn't sound adult enough for me - I feel the same about names like Ellie and Evie, though.

i dont really want her to be associated with effy from skins (no offence to the character) do u think this is a problem?

No - sounds like 'effing'.

Also it's not a proper name. Sounds made-up and like a nn for a longer name.

BroomstickOfLove · 05/12/2016 10:53

I like it, but as a nickname. I know an Effie whose full first name is Evangeline, which I rather like.

Minkybinkyboo · 05/12/2016 10:56

It's a gorgeous name. I am biased as we have an Effie. Totally suits her and there are no others at nursery! It is a nickname for her full name of Evelyn though x

reindeerbitesback · 05/12/2016 11:33

I think she might only be associated with Effy from skins for a brief period in her teen years (if they are even aware of skins by that time!) - I wouldn't worry.

Effie from the hunger games is a more modern association.

BooFuckingHoo · 05/12/2016 11:37

I have an Ettie (Cosette)

mummarichardson · 05/12/2016 11:40

I love it, it was on my list but made the mistake of telling people and they laughed and said 'you want to call your daughter eff off'' nob heads put me right off but I still love it. The alternative is Aofie which is pronounced "eefa" which seems to be more acceptable for some reason x

Frazzled2207 · 05/12/2016 11:57

I like it. I think of the Hunger Games character.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 05/12/2016 12:05

I know a little Effie and hers is short for Elizabeth. I didn't really like it at first as I'd never heard of it before, but it's growing on me. But I do think there are are far prettier nicknames for Elizabeth though. At least she will have options when she's older.

Makes me think of old Scottish women!

Cosmicglitterpug · 05/12/2016 13:05

Nothing wrong with old Scottish women.

MaryAll · 05/12/2016 16:05

I think it sounds more like a nickname honestly ...

SpotTheDuck · 05/12/2016 16:07

I like it as a nickname for elizabeth

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 05/12/2016 16:12

It was Mrs Doubtfire's name - short for Euphegenia I think. I quite like Effie but I think you would need a Sunday best name and have Effie as a diminutive.

SignoraStronza · 05/12/2016 16:20

I know a little Effemie - think it's a Greek name. Hadn't thought about the Skins character - iirc she was an Elizabeth.

Lapinlapin · 05/12/2016 16:24

Like Gruffalo it reminds me of Effi Briest. I like the name.

I think it German it's short for Elfriede.

girlelephant · 05/12/2016 16:27

I think it sounds like a NN rather than a name.

BipBippadotta · 06/12/2016 17:14

Effie just sounds tremendously wet to me. Sorry.

CoraPirbright · 06/12/2016 19:33

I think Effie is rather sweet. I also like Elphine (a la Cold Comfort Farm). Both strike me as rather fey and spiritual but I like that...
