Love the name Ezra but Dh insists it sounds like a girls name and has told everyone this to which we've received many negative comments and agreement that it sounds like a girls name!

This has put me off a lot but I do keep coming back to it!

Do you think it sounds like a girls name?? (have read it is in Turkey).

Is it really that unusual, do you know any in real life? I don't really want an unusual name, it's just that I like this one!

Do you think it will increase in popularity? It's 127 in the 2015 charts, my other children's names are around 15-20.

Driving myself crazy thinking about names and mot sure it's worth trying to convince Dh is I'm not brave enough to use it!

No way would I consider it a girls name. It's an old Hebrew boys name. Personally I love it and I was very keen on it when I was pregnant. DH vetoed it though on account of Ezra Pound.

It is rising in popularity, though if that's not something to bother you I'd say it's a really lovely name.

Ahoybee · 02/12/2016 00:32

I like it!

There's a main character in pretty little liars called Ezra so more people might know of it now. Never met anyone called that though!

Maybe as a middle name if you can't agree on it, I say go for it if you like it though Smile

gruffaloshmuffalo · 02/12/2016 00:35

I have a baby nephew called Ezra. We call him Ezzie. It's a lovely name!

IneedAqueenMortificadoNickname · 02/12/2016 00:47

It's top of my name list if I ever have another boy.

FabFiveFreddie · 02/12/2016 00:50

For me it's a boy's name. And only appropriate if the boy is Jewish.

JosephineMaynard · 02/12/2016 00:56

Definitely a boys name.

I've met one Ezra - infant school age.

SpecialFlowSnake · 02/12/2016 01:01

I like it but can see that the -a ending is problematic. So I wonder if Israel might be a compromise?

squoosh · 02/12/2016 01:11

It certainly seems to be getting more popular, if threads on MN are anything to go by at least. I don't think it sounds that out there or unusual. I certainly don't think you need to be Jewish to use an OT name.

That said if your DH is set against it you probably need to keep looking.

qumquat · 02/12/2016 06:31

I don't think it sounds like a girl's name at all. Luca is very popular with same 'a' ending. Also Noah. I'm surprised it's so low on the charts actually as I know a couple.

mudandmayhem01 · 02/12/2016 06:38

My old dog was called Ezra, it was a bit of a joke 18years ago Ezra pound, Ezra hound, I grew to love the name and would have considered it for ds but you can't call your son after the dog ( also Pound was a fascist, which tarnishes if you are of a literary bent.)

QueenCuntyFlippers · 02/12/2016 06:43

Love it. It's definitely a boys name...no question

I just think Ezra Pound.

badhotfanny · 02/12/2016 07:16

I know one, a baby. Not sure about it at all. It was my nickname at school though, and I'm female.

HOHOHOvariesBeforeBrovaries · 02/12/2016 07:18

It's lovely. Definitely becoming popular.

newroundhere · 02/12/2016 07:21

Having had a similar dilemma when choosing our DS's name I would definitely say be brave! We dithered about an unusual name and went for it in the end - the name fits him perfectly and I can't imagine him being called anything else.

Ezra is a proper name so if you like it, go for it!

WhirlwindHugs · 02/12/2016 07:22

I like it. Old Testament boys names are very popular in general and most people seem to recognise them as that completely fine.

I agree that Ezra in Pretty Little Liars probably has made it more commonly known.

newroundhere · 02/12/2016 07:25

...just had to google Ezra Pound Blush

But on that basis I suspect he might not be as well known as he once was unless I am a complete dunce, which is entirely possible

alteredimages · 02/12/2016 07:38

To me Ezra is clearly a boy's name. Bear in mind that the character called Ezra in Pretty Little Liars is a creep and worse, but I doubt anyone will remember the show by the time your DS is old enough to care.

Why would it only be appropriate for a Jewish boy FabFiveFreddie? There are lots of Old Testament names common in the Christian tradition, like Rachel, Naomi, Joshua, David etc.

I have never heard of Ezra being a girl's name in Turkey, although Esra is in Turkey and the Arab world. It is pronounced completely differently though with the emphasis on the second syllable, at least in Arabic speaking countries.

There is a French singer called Erza who is quite famous, I think her name is Albanian.

Gruffalosfriend · 02/12/2016 08:35

Definitely boys name.

Grindelwaldswand · 02/12/2016 08:37

I like Asa for a boy would never actually name a boy that though

AmaDablam · 02/12/2016 08:41

I like it and coincidentally met an Ezra for the first time yesterday. He was around 18 years old, known as Ez/Ezzy to his mates. It suited him.

BratFarrarsPony · 02/12/2016 08:43

no it really doesnt sound like a girl's name. it is clearly a boy's name.
Tell ur DH he is being thick...:)

iklboo · 02/12/2016 08:48

If someone told me about someone called Ezra I'd presume a male. It doesn't sound remotely feminine to me.

Baseballcupcakes · 02/12/2016 08:51

It's very popular where I am. I know 3 under 5 and lots have said they were/are considering it.

It's nice if not a bit trendy. It's a solid Old Testament name, I picture a wise old man rather than a girls name! It could well become as popular as Noah.
