Tobias or Toby on birth certificate?

After much deliberation, DH and I are pretty certain that if this baby is a boy he will be called Toby. However, I'm not sure whether to have Tobias on the birth certificate. I'm aware that Toby has been a stand alone name as far back as Shakespearean times but it is a derivative of Tobias and I'm quite a big fan of 'full' names formally. Plus I like the Hebrew origins of Tobias. However, we would probably only use Tobias very rarely, if at all, so is it best to just go with Toby? I'm definitely overthinking this!

I'd put the longer version, even if it never gets used at least the option is there.

Mine is just Toby. My consideration of Tobias lasted seconds, and was an afterthought go deciding on Toby, rather than wanting Tobias as a name.

Interestingly my 1st child is named long-name but ALWAYS known as short-name. I'd always planned on long-name when pregnant and hadn't really though about shortening, but I did so within days of his birth and 14 years later it hasn't changed.

I would just use Toby as it is established as a stand alone name.

Toby.

I don't like Tobias at all. Reminds me of Tobias Funke from Arrested Development.

Toby is nice.

Mine is just a Toby. Never even considered Tobias - he was left slightly bemused when school asked if his name was Tobias. I know of one Tobias who goes by that, plus one who uses Toby. Go with whatever you prefer.

Mine is Tobias on the bc.

Sometimes you really need those 3 syllables to be said through gritted teeth at the end of a testing day Grin

Gruffalosfriend · 30/11/2016 10:22

Tobias is lovely imo.

Sophronia · 30/11/2016 13:04

I'd put Tobias on the bc.

BikeRunSki · 30/11/2016 13:06

I'd put the long version (but prefer Tobin) on the bc. Gives you options.

islandmummy · 30/11/2016 13:08

I know an Anthony who is sometimes a Tony and sometimes a Toby (just as another option!)

MollyHuaCha · 30/11/2016 13:31

Toby is a lovely name in its own right.

sluj · 30/11/2016 13:34

Mine is Tobias on the birth cert and mostly Toby at home
Plus Tobes, Toblerone, Toby wan kenobi, Tobermory etc

KlingybunFistelvase · 30/11/2016 13:41

I like either, but slightly prefer Tobias I think.
