Is Barney too cutesy?

I'm just about to have our first child and we've had a girls names sorted for ages but we can't agree on a boys name. There just isn't one that either of us love never mind both of us. DH has suggested Barney which originally I think was a joke but it has really grown on him. I think it's a cute name for a little boy but don't know about as an adult. Thoughts?

I know a 2 year old Barney. I wouldn't worry about it being too 'cute' for an adult. His contemporaries are going to be Freddie, Ollie, Harry and Alfie.

If my bump is a boy he will be a Barnaby, Barney for short.

KlingybunFistelvase · 30/11/2016 09:56

I prefer barnaby with nn Barney.

OliviaStabler · 30/11/2016 09:58

First thing I think of when you say Barney is a big purple dinosaur Blush Sorry.

Like the name, can't help the association.

TwinkleTwinkleLittleBat · 30/11/2016 10:11

It's not awful, but it does (to me) sound more like a childhood nickname than an adults name. And yes, there is the dinosaur connection too..

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 30/11/2016 10:12

yes

Gruffalosfriend · 30/11/2016 10:19

Yes, too cutesy imo (and similar to Barmy)...

Barnaby sounds stronger.

Butterpuff · 30/11/2016 10:34

I do love Barnaby with nn Barney. Best of both worlds.

Kitch82 · 30/11/2016 11:05

I'll be honest I think big purple dinosaur too!

I like it. Isn't that character in How I Met Your Mother called Barney? And he's supposed to be the stud-muffin character (works for me, I think he's hot) so seems to be a name that would work for a man too Smile

DramaAlpaca · 30/11/2016 11:09

Just don't do as an acquaintance of mine did and give him a cutesy middle name too. She called her son Barney Bob, which was cute on a small child but not so much now he's in his 20s.

Barnaby is lovely though.

MrsMeeseeks · 30/11/2016 12:39

Barney is a lovely name!

Nospringflower · 30/11/2016 12:45

I think Barney is a good name.

Sophronia · 30/11/2016 13:03

I know a Barnabas with Barney for short

cheweduprope · 30/11/2016 13:48

I think it's fine. I know an adult called Barney and never thought anything of it.

crumble82 · 30/11/2016 13:53

I work with a grown up Barney and I've never thought of the name as too cutesy. I love it.

Changerazelea · 10/12/2016 10:51

Thinking of this for for my next DS so glad you have started thread!

When I was 17 kissed a very handsome 25 year old with this name so can't tell DH where the inspiration has come from or he may object!

Must say all that's holding me back is the purple dinosaur however doesn't seem to be as popular as when I was a child so may be able to get over it!

raviolidreaming · 10/12/2016 12:24

Along with all the Teddys, and I prefer Barney to Teddy by a long way!

SausageSoda · 10/12/2016 13:41

I love Barnaby. Barney as a nn.

septembersunshine · 10/12/2016 13:57

I know a baby Bertie. ( and is it any cuter then archie or Alfie or any other cuteish boys name?) .Barney is not too cute imo but I would put Barnaby on the bc to give your baby more options.

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2016 14:13

The Barney in DS's class is a little thug. Anything but cute.

justpeachy74 · 10/12/2016 14:14

I had a crush on a Barney when I was at 6th form.

MiniMaxi · 10/12/2016 18:02

I know an adult Barney who feels it would've been nice to have a more formal full name - but I haven't ever thought it seemed cutesy. Also know a Barnaby who goes by Barney.
