My daughter is 13 weeks old and we called her Esme Rose pn ( Es-ME)
However some people say Esmay and it drives me mad. Is it too late to change her name?
Xx

I'm with the OP, I'd pronounce it Ez-Me unless told otherwise. I think it's much nicer than Ez-may.

OP, you aren't too late to change her name if you want to. Or you could just correct people every time until they get used to pronouncing it the way you want, which they will.

ZoeH123 · 21/11/2016 23:08

We are from Bromsgrove

Just correct people's pronunciation.

Bringmewineandcake · 21/11/2016 23:09

I know of 2 Esme's and both are pronounced Ezzmee. It's a lovely name, just persevere with the correcting.

BikeRunSki · 21/11/2016 23:10

Ironically, 45 years ago my parents had problems with people pronouncing my sister's name, Zoë, as Zoo.

Enidblyton1 · 21/11/2016 23:12

I would say Ez-mee (unless there was an accent on the last e).

If you love the name when it's pronounced Ez-me, I wouldn't change it. Just keep calling her Ez-mee and people will soon start saying it the way you like. She's only 13 weeks - give it time.

A friend of mine called her daughter Clementine. To begin with some people pronounced it clement-een and some people clement-yne. She always pronounces it -teen and people soon caught on.

Crispbutty · 21/11/2016 23:16

I wouldn't change it, it's a lovely name.

ZoeH123 · 21/11/2016 23:17

Ha ha didn't notice that!

Esme is much nicer than Evie. Just tell people, "actually it's Ez-mee" and they won't get it wrong again. I knew an Esme at school who pronounced it Ez-mee.

Regret is a awful name for a baby Grin

peaceloveandbiscuits · 21/11/2016 23:35

*an Hmm

LittleFilly · 21/11/2016 23:44

I'd pronounce it Es-may too (and think it comes from the French). But if it's going to bug you forever, then not too late to change it.

Meadows76 · 21/11/2016 23:49

You would really change your child's name rather than tell people how to pronounce Confused

user1471495191 · 22/11/2016 00:01

Our daughter is Esme (pronounced Ez-me). It is the old English pronunciation when it doesn't have an accent. Most people get it without issue, and nursery staff asked specifically how we pronounced it, but a few persist with calling her Ez-may as if we are incapable of pronouncing it correctly, even after we've corrected them time and again. It riles me every time, but I like her name too much to consider changing it. I am looking forward to a time when she will be able to politely correct everyone who dares to get it wrong Grin

celtiethree · 22/11/2016 00:32

I'd pronounce it as Ez-me as well. Much nicer name than Evie. I'd leave it.

Buntysoven · 22/11/2016 00:45

Agree that it's an accent that gives the May ending. Esmee is much prettier and an English name. Esmay is French and reminds me of dismay! Stick to your guns OP.

notangelinajolie · 22/11/2016 01:06

Noooo don't change it, its a lovely name. I thought it was Es-May too .... But that doesn't mean I am right and you are wrong. Please pronounce it how you want it to be pronounced.

ElizabethHoney · 22/11/2016 01:19

Esmee is the more traditional pronunciation, and Esmay the American-influenced one.

I'd keep the same spelling and just correct people. It's actually less hassle having to correct the pronunciation of one's name than the spelling.

Beautiful name.

CouldIHaveIt · 22/11/2016 01:21

It's EASY to change it in the first year. Through MN mostly I've known quite a few people do it.

Evie is lovely💐

ZoeH123 · 22/11/2016 03:15

I think correcting people will annoy her. I just wished I picked a name in the top ten baby names, Evie is popular where we live so she wouldn't have any trouble.
I just get so wound up over the Esmay pronoucatuon. My husband loves then name Esme though and finds it difficult and heartbreaking to consider a change but has agreed Evie.

Es-may pronounciaton here.

Either way, much nicer than Evie.

Joinourclub · 22/11/2016 03:46

I'd say Ez mee. I think it's a lovely name. Who has been mispronouncing it? Do they get it right once you correct them? Most people introduce themselves / their children verbally so mispronouncuations aren't a daily occurrence.

ZoeH123 · 22/11/2016 05:54

It's my brother mainly!
But sometimes when I say Esme Es-me to people they can still say es-may back to me so the change of spelling wouldn't help x

OP posts:
Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/11/2016 08:47

I say Ez may too.
What will you change it to, OP ?
Rose is a beautiful, stand alone name.
How about Rose Esme.
Ella Rose
Esther Rose
Elspeth Rose
Emmeline Rose
Estelle Rose
Eliza Rose
Evelyn Rose

ErniesGhostlyGoldTops · 22/11/2016 08:53

We have an Esme Rose in our family and I adore the name. It is pronounced Ez me. Why do people have to try and re-invent speaking FFS!

KlingybunFistelvase · 22/11/2016 08:57

I'd change it while she's still little. I know an Esme in her seventies and she is definitely Ez-mee, but as you can see on here there are different pronunciations. Evie doesn't have that problem (surely nobody says Ev-ee to rhyme with heavy or anything Confused). Go for it.
