To rhyme with plot or with the same sound as the ending of toilet?

Clear as mud I'm sure!

Shar- lit (Scottish£

Chinlo · 18/11/2016 20:36

To rhyme with harlot and scarlet. So the second syllable is a "schwa" sound (you can google that if you don't know what it is - it's useful info!).

I've never heard anybody pronounce it with LOT to rhyme with plot. And I've known quite a few Charlottes!

Backingvocals · 18/11/2016 20:40

Believe me chinlo - people do. And then there are the people who think it's S H A R ....

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/11/2016 20:42

To rhyme with scarlet.

BertrandRussell · 18/11/2016 20:42

Charl'lt.

MollyHuaCha · 18/11/2016 20:43

Char-LOT is the French pronunciation and the one first encountered as a child. I was really disappointed to learn that some people make it rhyme with Scarlet! Charlotte was my great grandmother's name. I wanted it as a name for my daughter, but was actually put off by the fact that some people would not say the name in the way we wanted.

BonusNewt · 18/11/2016 20:46

I'm a Charlotte and and I prefer it to rhyme with plot. DH calls me Shar-let if he wants to be annoying. Shaaaaaar-let!

Chinlo · 18/11/2016 20:50

Aaaaah okay. Yeah that's still pretty surprising though, given how traditional/popular a name it is.

Backingvocals · 18/11/2016 20:54

You callin' my name boring/common? Wink

Chinlo · 18/11/2016 20:56

Noooo, of course not! I went on thesaurus.com just so that I wouldn't!

littlemissneela · 18/11/2016 20:57

My daughter is a Charlotte and I pronounce it Shar-lott.

Backingvocals · 18/11/2016 20:59

Grin Actually I think it is borderline both now. I still like it though (thanks mum and dad Smile)

Abraiid2 · 18/11/2016 21:00

It's a French name and the lotte is pronounced lot.

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/11/2016 21:01

Yes but it's been Anglicised. I've met 1000 Charlottes (approximately!) and all of them have pronounced it as shar-lut.

OutnumberedbyFurchesters · 18/11/2016 21:02

Most if the time - Char-lut sometimes Char-lot.

Depends on accent I think :)

Ilovenannyplum · 18/11/2016 21:04

Shar-lut

Backingvocals · 18/11/2016 21:04

Two syllable words in English normally have the stress on the first syllable. It's of French origin but so are lots of words in English and we don't feel the need to go all "Fillay of beef" as the Americans do.

Sharlet (it the let sounds like 0lut with our accent), because that's how my friend Charlotte likes it.

cushioncovers · 18/11/2016 21:12

Shar lut

MyKidsHaveTakenMySanity · 18/11/2016 21:17

I have a little Charlotte and I pronounce it Shaar-lut. But I'm Northern English so a lot is accent.

We also used call her Shazza to take the pee. Unfortunately it stuck and we use it all the time. Damn our joke.

SunnyInMay · 18/11/2016 21:24

Rhymes with harlot.

I wonder how Wills and Kate pronounce it?
