DW and I are having an enjoyable struggle naming our DS2 (due December, so there's time yet!)

We have a difference of opinion on Blake. I'd be interested for people's input on what associations you have with the name: positive, negative, indifferent etc.

Naturally you will suggest alternatives. Those would be very welcome too.

Reminds me of either William Blake and Blake Lively (or now Reynolds as she's married to Ryan) so interesting twist as a female link for me.

Lovely name either way though...

nat73 · 28/10/2016 14:58

A bit naff and quite American. Sorry!

HingleMcCringleberry · 28/10/2016 15:07

Joanne, I'll put you down as a maybe then.

Nat, no need to apologise - I asked for an opinion and you gave one, a dissenting one no less, so you have my thanks for that.

Magnus.

Blake's 7 - that's a blast from the past. Loved watching and then reenacting it in the primary school playground.

It seems to be in the process of becoming a girl's name: if you care about such things.

I really like Finley - pronounced FINLee.

ByeByeLilSebastian · 28/10/2016 20:28

Is it for a boy or a girl? Either works actually tbh.

I quite like it

FuckThatToOneSide · 28/10/2016 20:48

For a boy? Not good connotations for me, but that is purely because I have only met one in my life and he was an epic shit.

I do really like it for a girl actually, though imagine it's quite marmite.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 28/10/2016 20:52

Reminds me of the teacher in the Key and Peele sketch which has been seen 103 million times.

jaggythistle · 28/10/2016 21:09

I do actually know a wee Scottish Blake. So not that out there. :)

We briefly almost went with Duncan (of the clam Mcleod Grin ).

Also considered some of these. .. (well at least one of us did, we weren't both so keen on all of them! )

Douglas
Keir
Gregor
Nathan
David
Luke
Ross
Malcolm
Graham

Then we had a DD this time anyway. :)

I vetoed Jean-Luc....

HingleMcCringleberry · 28/10/2016 21:31

Cauliflower, we love that sketch. It's why we could not consider Aaron as one of our names.

Jaggy, firstly, there can be only one. But I prefer Duncan to Connor, so that's a smart choice. Secondly, you vetoed Jean-Luc in favour of James Tiberius didn't you? Highly revealing choice that!

What about Ruraidh?

Joinourclub · 30/10/2016 07:29

A boy I once taught. Not particularly bright , but a really lovely lad.

Scorbus · 30/10/2016 07:30

Nastiest child I ever taught (sorry)

When me and DH were thinking up names it became apparent just how many names I subconsciously disliked!

Beebeeeight · 30/10/2016 07:37

Home and away
Lively
The poet

It goes with Logan

DiegeticMuch · 30/10/2016 08:04

Dynasty.

But no one under 35 will know about Dynasty, realistically. Or Blake 7.

swimmerforlife · 30/10/2016 08:16

I'm a New Zealander so I automatically think of Sir Peter Blake (a very successful sailor who was sadly held captive and shot in Brazil) which is pretty good connotation for me.

Also Blake from Home and Away.

It's a nice name and goes extremely well with Logan.

HingleMcCringleberry · 30/10/2016 08:51

DoAndroids, our surname requires spelling all the time, so sadly, nice a name as Ruaraidh is, it's going to have to remain off the table, as getting the child to spell out his first name and surname every day of his life will get pretty wearing for him I'd imagine!

Joinourclub and Scorbus - what are the chances you were teaching he same kid?

Thanks for all the input team - I'll have to google Dynasty, all I knew about it was Joan Collins was in it!

Pipilangstrumpf · 31/10/2016 07:52

It sounds like a surname. I think of Quentin Blake or William Blake.

BotBotticelli · 31/10/2016 12:56

Op I have a boy called Keir.

It s a Scottish name (we're not Scottish we just liked it!), I think it sounds cool and passes the bin man or barrister test!

We also have a boy called Finn and Logan was on our list too...

toomuchtimereadingthreads2016 · 31/10/2016 14:13

Blake Lively

icantgetnosleep5 · 31/10/2016 14:51

To me its another Hayden/ Kayden / Kylan name :-s
Sorry

Dailymaildailyfail · 31/10/2016 14:55

I think of Amy Winehouses' horrid and controlling Ex husband.
