Connotations when you hear the name Blake

DW and I are having an enjoyable struggle naming our DS2 (due December, so there's time yet!)

We have a difference of opinion on Blake. I'd be interested for people's input on what associations you have with the name: positive, negative, indifferent etc.

Naturally you will suggest alternatives. Those would be very welcome too.

Blake is clearly a surfer dude with sun bleached hair. He's totally awesome man.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 28/10/2016 13:27

Blake 7

And the guy who plays Neil in the Inbetweeners

NerrSnerr · 28/10/2016 13:27

For the record I think it's a great name.

ILoveMyMonkey · 28/10/2016 13:30

I thought of Blake Lively the actress.

HingleMcCringleberry · 28/10/2016 13:33

Namechange30, I do like it, and DW is struggling to articulate (at least to me) why she doesn't. Something to do with social strata, I think?

To be honest, in life, there are names you just don't like. You shouldn't have to defend or articulate why you do or don't. I was just interested if her view on the name was shared by others. We won't be calling the child Blake, because if she is, at best, mildly unhappy with the name, that's pretty grim. I'd not want to be argued into liking/begrudgingly accepting a name I didn't like - especially when I'll be saying it day in day out to someone I love for the next 50 years.

Sorry I assumed you were female!

NameChange30 · 28/10/2016 13:36

I agree that it's important for both of you to like the name. It's a shame your DW isn't a fan but I'm sure you'll find something else you both like. Do you have a shortlist?

HingleMcCringleberry · 28/10/2016 13:37

Fair assumption - the site is called mumsnet!

Thanks for all your input so far lovely people. If the boy does grow up to be a Patrick Swayze from Point Break style surfer, and we've called him Archibald, I'm going to consider it a trick missed!

NameChange30 · 28/10/2016 13:39

What about Max? It's a bit more classic but it still goes with Logan.

HingleMcCringleberry · 28/10/2016 13:40

Namechange, we do have a shortlist. It waxes and wanes as we have a crisis of confidence every so often:

Adair
Angus (a little too Scottish for me, truth be told)
Brodie
Cameron
Duncan
Finlay (we'd nn him Finn, so why not just Finn? Because we're pretentious, that's why!)
Gabriel
Lucas

That's about as many off the top of my head as I can remember.

EssentialHummus · 28/10/2016 13:47

William Blake here too.

I like Finn (by itself!), Gabriel and Cameron from your list.

NerrSnerr · 28/10/2016 13:47

I like Cameron and Duncan. Finn/ Finlay is a naughty name in my head.

NameChange30 · 28/10/2016 13:47

I vote Finlay! And I don't think it's pretentious to call him Finlay on the bc but Finn every day Smile

Sukitakeitoff · 28/10/2016 13:57

From your list, I think Brodie and Gabriel go really well with Logan Smile

Finn / Finlay are just so popular now which would put me off even though they're nice names.

Blake makes me think of Dynasty and then Home & Away. Is your dw coming round to it at all having seen this thread?

GruochMacAlpin · 28/10/2016 13:59

Actually Logan's Run and Blake 7 together are pretty cool!

However what about the following alternatives:

Blair
Blane
Struan
Lewis
Harris
Ian
Callum
Douglas

I was also going to say Donald but perhaps Don Logan is an unfortunate association..,Grin

user1477427207 · 28/10/2016 14:02

Logan and Blake sounds really really cool

Chinlo · 28/10/2016 14:02

I think of William Blake, James Blake, and Blake Shelton.... So no particular theme!!

I'm not normally a fan of surnames as first names but Blake is one that I don't mind. And Logan is one that I really like! I think they go together well too, better than any of those other names in your list actually.

HingleMcCringleberry · 28/10/2016 14:03

Sukitakeitoff, do I dare show my DW the thread? She might take it that I've been trying to drum up support for a name that for her is veto'd!

Interesting on Finlay/Finn... I hadn't appreciated it was so far up the naming charts these days. Then again, my sister's name is Olivia, her name has been top 10 in the UK for 30 years, and until last year the only other Olivia I had met was from Hawaii!

OP posts:
Helpisathand13 · 28/10/2016 14:09

Off your list I like Lucas.

GruochMacAlpin · 28/10/2016 14:15

I have to say, all the Finlays I know (about 10 of them) are called Finlay. None of them go by Finn.

Make sure you actually like Finlay as the full name in case he ends up using it.

HingleMcCringleberry · 28/10/2016 14:34

Gruoch... that is a lot of Finlays to know!

We do like Finlay, so I feel we're in the clear if we go that route.

Namechange, thanks for Max, we'll chuck it in the mix.

OP posts:
iklboo · 28/10/2016 14:36

A nice but scatty bloke I work with.

GruochMacAlpin · 28/10/2016 14:46

Grin. They are spread over an age range from teens to babies and we are in Scotland so it's not unusual.

There are lots of Finlays and Lewis's around my bit.

From your list the only ones I don't currently know any children with that name are:
Brodie
Gabriel

MrsToddsShortcut · 28/10/2016 14:47

Ooh! There was an actress called Elizabeth Adair in the Tomorrow People!

(desperately clings to science-fi theme)

Adair is a fab name btw.Smile

joanne90 · 28/10/2016 14:52
