My favourite name in the world, but can enough people pronounce it? I don't want my child going through life explaining how to pronounce, and why it's pronounced the way it is.

I really love it but I think the YOLO trend may have ruined it :-(

Either way... it's going to be one of those names that you fear, and sounds more like a nickname than an actual full name imo.

iolo or LOLO?! If iolo then most people in Wales will know how to pronounce it. Probably not so much elsewhere, so you would have the issues you describe.

Sorry it is an i at the front, so pronounced Yolo as exactly the same as the stupid trend that nearly stopped me from choosing it.

So I'm Welsh, my great grandfather was named Ioworth (yo-worth) but was abbreviated to Iolo (Yo-low) as Ioworth rhymed with his surname (The Worth part)

I love the history behind the name, and love the sentiment, I was worried about the Yolo trend, but I refuse to let it ruin a great name!!

I'm more worried about readin the name, especially in type capitol i looks like a small l etc...

i love it, just makes me think of iolo williams and his lovely soothing welsh nature documentaries

It's a male name, but I think it could work for a girl, I don't see why not.

It is a good point, but Yolo is almost dead now, baby isn't born yet so by the time he's 4/5 and is capable of taking flak for it would it still be an issue come 2021?

I think it's a beautiful name. I'd know how to pronounce it and it wouldn't think twice about the stupid YOLO thing but then I live in a deeply rooted Welsh speaking part of Wales so probably not representative of the majority. Keep it for a middle name even if you don't go with it for the first name (I may be biased as my children have very Welsh names, easier to pronounce first names and very traditional middle names!). If I had another it would definitely be up there on the short list.

I love this name and think it's gorgeous. Trends come and go, by the time he's at school, Yolo will be a past thing.

It would be really really easy for the child to learn to write his name!

Iolo would look like low-low all in lower case.
Not difficult to explain though.

It's not awful (I like a good Welsh name) but I wouldn't if you're outside Wales. I had to Google how to pronounce it and it wasn't an easy find. It's very like Rollo which is another cool AF name but hard to carry off. Unfortunately you're also likely to get a lot of YOLO jokes from knobheads and it really depends on how long your fuse is with things like that.

We were considering Iestyn, Rhodri was ruled out due to dog being named same, we even considered Amlodd, but that wouldve been child abuse.

There will be a lot of people who don't know how to pronounce it, especially if your child moves out of Wales. The i can look like an l as well. But it's a lovely name so you need to decide how much of an issue it would be with people getting it wrong. Personally, I would go for it

Don't use it for a girl! People in England will think you've got J-Lo spelt wrong

It's my first child and despite having historical and family routes I just think having something too difficult for others to pronounce might infuriate the poor child long term.

I love both Iolo and Ianto. Not Welsh but would know how to say both. Lovely names.
