Love it

I love Dorothy (it's also a big family name) but don't like the abbreviations Dot or Dotty - in my family we have a Dolly and a Dor. DS would have been a Dorothy but he was a boy.

I seriously wondered about Dorothy - but Dotty would have been a disastrous nickname in combination with our surname (a troublesome one that rules out several first initials including A and P ... and sundry other names including one I got as far as running past my mother!).

You're likely to be able to control nicknames for several years and can veto the worst ones up to a point. It's the ones that kids might latch onto because of a particularly strong resonance that I think you need to watch out for. And then take a deep breath and go for something knowing that they'll always come up with something difficult if "they" want to. ..

Love it.
Then someone mentioned the nn Thea which I adore, though not so keen on Dorothea as I am Dorothy.

Agree with pps that it is not a name for 50 year olds! I didn't go to school with a single Dorothy. They were mostly Karens and Traceys! Dorothy was more for my grandparents' generation, I had a great-aunt Dorothy.

Having said that, I like Dorothy, it has a nice meaning ('gift of god'?), nice sound, good associations (Wizard of Oz) and she would probably be the only one in the class.

Due for a revival, I think.

Dorothy is lovely!

UnicornPee · 12/10/2016 19:16

Not a fan of Dorothy, it's ugly to say.
But Dottie and dot are mega cute

n0ne · 12/10/2016 19:17

Love it!

Bountybarsyuk · 12/10/2016 19:34

Dot is not a cute name for a teenager. I think Dorothy is fine, once you've adjusted yourself out of thinking it's an old person's name, it's actually a nice name. I also like Dorothea which means 'God's gift'.

Zadocthepriest · 12/10/2016 20:04

Dorothy is lovely, as is Dora and Dolly.

Sophronia · 13/10/2016 12:07

I like it nn Dorrie
