Opinions on our favourite girl names?

We are pregnant:D

It's still very fresh and new, so we won't tell our families yet. But for quite some time we honestly didn't think this would happen (especially when we were younger), so we're super excited (I'm so happy I could cry [I actually did cry...] and she feels the same). Sooo, baby names...

My wife is American, I'm Swiss and we live in Edinburgh...
So, we are really wondering whether our favourite names would work here and in the UK in general.

First names:
Tara (my wife's favourite and I really like it as well)
Clarissa
Miranda
Magnolia (maybe as a first or middle name)

Middle names:
Magnolia
Millicent
Payton
Ylva

My wife would love to honour her late grandmother, so we're considering the name Magnolia, but we both think that could be overly feminine and princessy when combined with the first names we like...
I personally really like the name Ylva (also for personal reasons).

So, yeah. What do you think? Would these work for a child growing up in Scotland?

I personally love Magnolia and Clarissa. Magnolia is on my list but my partner hates it sadly. Tbh I think a name can work wherever you are, just sometimes an area has quite a few children with a popular name. All of your choices are fairly unusual though so I'd be surprised if you have this problem. Congratulations!

I really don't like Magnolia, sorry. The name Tara reminds me of an actress (she was in the American pie movies) but it is a rather nice name.

I do like Miranda Payton. That sounds lovely.

Yawning: thank you :)! But I'm not sure about unusual names. As somebody that has always had to repeat my name "unusual" isn't really something that attracts me personally to a name, to be honest. And good luck with finding a name yourself.

Horatio: I don't think that actress is particularly well known...

Rebel: I also like the name Tara. There are no negative connotations in the UK, right?

Sugar: Tara Magnolia really is beautiful. Although super feminine and very Southern (imo). I personally really prefer the other names. But as a middle name... and it's not like one can argue with honouring grandma. although the name Ylva would honour mine. And idk, how do people decide which relative they want to honour...?

We had two middle names so both sides of the family could be "honoured" and the first name was our own choice. Not shared with anyone before the birth. Why do you think Tara is southern? If anything it is Irish but perfectly usable wherever you are.

One of the reason we love Scotland so much:) in Switzerland same sex couples can't adopt and don't have access to reproductive medicine (and yes, they will change the birth certificate to show the biological parent if you go simply abroad for the procedure). And seeing as my wife comes from a rather small town in the US. Well. Thanks Scotland, seriously :)!!

I love Tara and Peyton. Just in case you are not aware, I believe Brits and Americans pronounce Tara differently. Admittedly my knowledge comes from watching True Blood but I think Americans pronounce it Terra but Brits say Tarah (to rhyme with car). The difference night impact on your choice.

I would have thought Magnolia would mean a paint colour for most Brits, I'm afraid.....

And no, only I am pregnant. But idk, isn't it a uhm... shared experience? So, idk. I guess that's why I wrote "we". Plus, we used her twin brother's sperm. So, yeah. It's us :) I thought that phrasing would make sense in English. But maybe not. Oops

Tara is also the name of the plantation in gone with the wind. But I prefer the Irish or Hindi association, tbh.

2 middle names is fine - me, my siblings and my children all have 2. 3 is OTT, but 2 is fine.

Ah, I just had a look at the colour. It's apparently super well known in the U.K. So, not as a first name, probably. But I was told in my post about boy names that middle names can be old-fashioned/weird. And yeah, I personally agree with this statement very much :)

Tara Magnolia Ylva are a lot of As, tbh. Poor kid, spelling all these names might be a bit difficult...

Miranda is lovely and underused. Miranda Payton is lovely and gets my vote. Magnolia as a first name in Scotland....Edinburgh maybe but don't move to Glasgow. Magnolia will get beat up in Glasgow.

Also, I'm with TurquoiseStar on the "we" aspect. It is my number 1 pet hate in the entire world. If my DH ever utters the phrase "we are/were pregnant" then I will have his balls. I'm 39w3d. He isn't pregnant, I'm fucking pregnant. However, it is your pregnancy so share it however you want. I may be projecting

I'm expecting a baby via sperm donation, DH is infertile. So good luck to you on that however, it's you that's pregnant not "we"

After talking with several experts we came to the conclusion that we did not want an anonymous donor, there are quite a lot of psychological issues to consider. Knowing where one comes from and that there were no financial incentives for the sperm donations are apparently fairly important issues. You should google it, seriously.

And her brother is still in the US and can't wait to be an uncle.

Go with what u and ur OH love for ur most precious baby, keep it secret from family and friends (everyone will have their own own opinions on names) and just announce it at the end ! 💐

I'm not saying sperm donations are bad. But that's what we chose and i happen to think it's a very reasonable decision.

I did not want to sound catty or invalidate other ways to experience pregnancy. Inguess I'm over sensitive today sorry
