Is it Ellie, Ella or just like the letter L?

LaundryQueenHatesIroning · 03/10/2016 11:46

I would say like the letter L

Tatlerer · 03/10/2016 11:46

It's like the letter L. But Halle is Hally

AndNowItsSeven · 03/10/2016 11:46

L

Loyly · 03/10/2016 11:47

Elle is like the letter L.
Halle is Hallie.

Soubriquet · 03/10/2016 11:47

Elle is L

Halle is Hal

if you want Ellie spell it like that and if you want Hallie spell it like that.

sleepyhead · 03/10/2016 11:51

I think technically to be pronounced Halley, Halle should be spelled Hallé (that's how the orchestra spells it anyway).

But I should imagine most baby Halles are referencing Halle Berry who doesn't have the thingy-whose-name-I-have-forgotten over the e.

If you wanted Elle to be Ellie I guess you could add the thingy.

MmmmWine · 03/10/2016 11:51

soubriquet Halle is pronounced 'Ha-Lee' around here - never heard of it pronounced 'Hal'

MmmmWine · 03/10/2016 11:52

Not having a go btw .... was just pondering!

JasperDamerel · 03/10/2016 11:53

El

Hallee

3Eggses · 03/10/2016 11:57

Elle = L
Halle = Hally

leccybill · 03/10/2016 12:00

Elle= L to me but I teach two Elles who tell me it's the Ellie sound. I feel like saying 'no it bloody isn't'.

senua · 03/10/2016 12:03

I think that Elle = L but I know of someone who thinks that Elle=Ellie. It's her name so hard to argue but I go Hmm every time I see it written down.

If they think Elle=Ellie then Ellie=what?Confused

chinlo · 03/10/2016 13:28

If they think Elle=Ellie then Ellie=what

=Ellieeeeeee

Notso · 03/10/2016 13:50

I know a few Elles who pronounce it Ellie.

I also know Hallies, Hals and a Hayley who all spell their name Halle.

If they think Elle = Ellie then Elle = what?

One parent said they thought any name with ie should be pronounced with an eye sound not an ee sound, so maybe Elleye? I thought she was wrong but I do know a Poppie that I always read as Popeye!

Pipilangstrumpf · 03/10/2016 15:36

Elle is a french name and pronounced Ell, just like Belle. I'm surprised that anyone would even consider pronouncing it differently Confused.

Halle isn't French but Scandinavian (had to google this) so you would pronounce the e.

BadToTheBone · 03/10/2016 15:37

L
Hallie

TheNaze73 · 03/10/2016 15:37

Elle = L
Ellie = Ellie Smile

Never heard it pronounced any other way

Dontgiveaschnitzel · 03/10/2016 19:15

I'm related to an Estonian Elle, the Estonian pronunciation of Elle is more like Ella; Ell-eh.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 03/10/2016 19:17

I thought the Scandi version was Halla?

leccybill · 03/10/2016 21:12

I know an Eleigh Hmm

KoalaDownUnder · 04/10/2016 15:41

Elle = El. As in Macpherson. Elle pronounced Ellie is nonsensical.

Halle = Hally

Ontopofthesunset · 04/10/2016 15:50

But Halle pronounced Hallie is also nonsensical, isn't it? According to English pronunciation rules it should be pronounced Hal. According to Scandinavian pronunciation rules it should be pronounced Hall-uh (with an unstressed schwa vowel sound st the end). I suppose if it were Greek like Penelope and Hermione it might be pronounced Hallie. But I don't think it is.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/10/2016 11:12

Ell.

In other languages such as German, the final e would be pronounced, so more like Ella, but IMO it would be confusing, and very likely irritating to many people, to expect that pronunciation of Elle in the U.K.

Pipilangstrumpf · 05/10/2016 13:53

In German Elle is pronounced Ell-eh (eh as in elephant). But it isn't a name in German, it's a unit of measurement.
