Juliet or Juliette?....

I prefer the look of Juliet but we went for (according to MN) superfluous letters in DD's name- Annabelle so DH thinks Juliette matches better. I sort of agree but I prefer the look of Juliet as Juliette looks like it has too many unnecessary letters. Bizarrely, I always think Annabel looks unfinished!! Do they need to match? Thank you! X

Like Juliet too.

Juliet

Juliet.

PointlessUsername · 28/09/2016 09:22

Juilette

Either is totally fine so if you prefer Juliet go with that. I don't get this thing about names 'going with' your other child's. They are individual people who will mostly go about their daily lives away from the other one when adults, so what does it matter?

notagiraffe · 28/09/2016 09:27

Totally agree with you OP: Annabel looks unfinished as a name and Juliette looks superfluous.
Annabelle and Juliet are fine.

Juliet

Glitterspy · 28/09/2016 09:39

Juliet is English, Juliette the French version I believe. I refer the former though not for nationalistic reasons!
No need to match imo.

PotatoBread · 28/09/2016 09:47

Juliet.

JennyOnAPlate · 28/09/2016 09:49

Juliet. Otherwise you and she will be forever correcting everyone.

LBOCS2 · 28/09/2016 09:51

In my experience it doesn't matter as people will spell it both ways Grin

I prefer Juliet though.

Aworldofmyown · 28/09/2016 09:56

Juliette. Because that is a family members name and Juliet seems weird to me!

Billynoname · 28/09/2016 10:04

Thanks ladies. Juliet it is. Xx

Oh def Juliet. The French way just looks so frilly!

FindingNemoFindingDory · 28/09/2016 12:59

I prefer Juliet Smile

HoratioNightboy · 29/09/2016 14:21

I'd only add that it may be pronouced differently depending on the spelling. If you want the emphasis on the first syllable then it's Juliet, but if you want it on the final syllable it should be Juliette.

I wouldn't compare it with Annabel as the emphasis there is always on the Anna part, and the additional 'frills' don't change anything.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/09/2016 16:06

Juliet looks nicer but I prefer the pronunciation of Juliette.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 29/09/2016 16:07

Juliet. I think I'd pronounce both the same any way.

MrsNuckyThompson · 29/09/2016 16:08

Juliette for me. Prettier.

TownMouseCuntMouse · 30/09/2016 14:09

I spent a LONG time agonising over this for DD2. I worried that for Juliette we would forever be correcting people, and they would think it unnecessarily 'frilly'. But actually, the ONS data shows that Juliette is the more common spelling, and most people seem to have assumed that is the spelling.

I also worried about pronunciation - I wanted emphasis on the final syllable (jool-ee-ET) - most people seem to pronounce it this way regardless of the spelling, but a sizeable minority seem to put the emphasis on the first syllable (JOOL-yut) in line with Harriet etc. We call her Lettie for short, which also only makes sense with the -ETTE being the bit that's stressed!

I therefore opted for Juliette, for the pronunciation reason but also because I liked the look of it more. DD1 has a very French name, and I find that english variants like Annabel, Isabel, etc look a bit thuddy and unfinished to me.

Honestly I drove DH and my best friends nuts over this! But in retrospect I'd just say pick the one you like the look of. I started off loving the spelling I eventually chose, but spent a lot of time fretting about it. And she suits this spelling much more - she is very waif-like and delicate and elegant like a long-legged pixie 😄

TempsPerdu · 30/09/2016 14:20

Much prefer Juliet - Juliette looks too frilly and girly to me (mind you tbh I'd also have plumped for Annabel over Annabelle so it's probably just a matter of taste!) In any case, it would never occur to me that Annabelle and Juliet didn't 'match'.

enchantmentandlove · 02/10/2016 05:24

I prefer it like Juliet, although I do prefer Annabelle
