Posted this in the wrong thread last night! So I need advice! Called my son Dylan James ( both family names - my maiden name is Dillon)! But people are spelling Dylan wrong and giving him silly nicknames! Starting to think we should call him by his middle name James! Thoughts on Dylan and James please??

What silly nicknames are they giving him?

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 08:58

Something called him Dyl , I nearly had a heart attack :(

Hmm
JenLindleyShitMom · 12/09/2016 09:03

Dyl? That's just a shortening. Not silly, it's the most obvious one. How did you not expect it it?

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 09:03

Never thought people would shorten Dylan. I'm stupid!!

Well before you do that, remember you could end up with Jimmy, Jim, Jamie, Jay. Would any of those bother you particularly?

I don't see what wrong with Dyl tbh but I know that's just personal taste.

Tbh you won't be able to control what nns he gets. I get called all sorts of things by my family and friends which have little or nothing to do with my name!

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 09:15

Yes that's what my husband has said , I can't control it! In future I will know to go for a name that can't be shortened! Don't like Jim either :(

If it makes you feel any better, it probably wouldn't have helped if you had picked a name which couldn't be shortened. He might have ended up being called something longer or totally unrelated.

I know a Charlotte who used to get called Carlotta, a Ross who got called Rossle and an Emma who got called Emmelina!

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 12/09/2016 09:26

You can correct people while he's still so little though, if it really bothers you.

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 09:26

lol ok you have definitely made me feel better! I was needing some reassurance, so thank you Smile

Yes I would just want Dylan , no Dyl or Dilly etc!! Awful!!!!!

MrsDc7 · 12/09/2016 09:29

I would correct people when they shorten it (not in a hysterical stick up the arse type way) My sons have short names and people used to call them even shorter versions - so I just said 'if I wanted him to be called insert shorter name here I would have called him that (in a lighthearted way- but everyone got the hint) xx

Oysterbabe · 12/09/2016 09:48

I like Dyl. I know 2 James' and both get called Jimmy.

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 09:49

Yes I will definitely be doing that! Don't understand why people can't just use the full proper name! Hate this baby name regret! I always said i would call my first son Dylan after my maiden name but now I'm so put off :(

OP posts:
Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 09:50

Oh really?? See I don't like Jimmy so that's out too then

I like the name Dylan much more than the name James. I agree about mentioning (light-heartedly) to your friends/family that you prefer the full name. I'm sure they'll understand - I know I would. That way everyone around you calls him Dylan, and if eventually his friends at school give him a shorter name, who cares? You'll rarely talk to them about him anyway.

As for spelling, it's a very easy name to spell.

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 11:19

Yes I'm maybe making a fuss over nothing! Close family friends call him Dylan! It was my hubbys work colleague called him Dyl! But I just have visions of him going to school and getting dilly etc etc!!!!! But suppose there are nicknames for every name! I need to learn to love Dylan again!

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 11:20

As for the spelling people are continuously spelling Dillon, perphaps to do with my maiden name! Hopefully over time that passes too

Dylan James is lovely.
People do tend to shorten names, however, I see nothing wrong with Dyl, or indeed 'D', but Dilly, not so much 😄

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 11:30

Thank you for the reassurance, want to love my sons name again! My head was running wild yesterday, had thoughts on dilbo (and worse!!) when he's at school but I guess I can't control that!!

James

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/09/2016 11:43

Children always come up with silly nick names.
Next doors James, used to get called Jimmy riddle, meaning piddle !

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 11:45

Haha! I guess there's a nickname for everything lol

My youngest brother is called Dylan Jay (Jay after my dad), and he always gets Dyl. Not really by family but all of his high school friends call him it. He also gets DJ a lot.

Daydreamer83 · 12/09/2016 14:10

Ah yikes! Why did I not think of this! Does he mind getting Dyl?
