Sam or Cyrus?

DS is due in December. Husband and I want a Persian name that is quite Anglicised. Our surname is very forrin-sounding and we would like his name to reflect a bit of both cultures if that makes sense.

I sort of think that Sam is too bland but Cyrus is too "out there". Also, is Sam always short for something or can I use it on its own? (It would be pronounced "Saam" in Farsi and I am not massively keen on that either).

TIA!

Cyrus makes me think of the lead villain in Con Air, Cyrus the virus, so I prefer Sam.

Cyrus makes me think of the bad guy from Scandal so personally, I prefer Sam. My brother is a Sam and it's short for 'Sammy'. I think it is a name in its own right.

I grew up with a very English Cyrus. He was a very nice chap who pulled of his exotic name so its a thumbs up for me.

Sam.

I knew a Cyrus in my teens. Very English and totally suited him. Different without being bonkers. As you have the link with your family too - go for it!

Thanks for all the replies! I think I am going to woman up and go for Cyrus.... Apparently he was a mighty Persian king so let's hope DS can pull it off!! Grin

Cyrus is a great name - cool, strong and elegant. I really like it!

Sam is quite dull in and overused in comparison.

I like Cyrus!

I gave an 8 year old Sam. We've only ever come across 2 others, so I can't say I've found it to be overused. I like that it is ageless/timeless etc. In our case it's short for Samuel, but I really wanted it to be short for Isambard!
