Gus and all it's variations (August, Augustus, etc) are becoming quite common, if that matters to you?

Monty as the whole name rather than a nickname? Okay as a kid but is it not a bit infantile for an adult? Kind of like calling a child Tommy or Jonny?

Solomon I really like.

I like Gus. I actually know a female Gus (Augusta) and it suits her well, but I think it works just as well for a boy. What would it be shoot for? Monty also needs to be short for something surely? Montgomery? Solomon is nice but quite a big name with no obvious shortenings.

Sol is a very common and quite obvious shortening, I would say.

Sol or solly are both used for Solomon

If you like monty you could even use Mon/Monty as a shortening of Solomon - best of both worlds :)

I like Solomon best and think Sol and Solly are great shortenings too. Not so keen on the other two names

Fabulous thanks - sounds like Solomon is the winner which is where we were leaning anyway but struggling to make a firm decision - picking for our daughter was much easier!

Gus is a) everywhere, and b) horrible (IMO only, of course). It reminds me of gas and pus. It's just totally unpleasant.
